DAVENPORT, Iowa – Each year in the United States, as many as 400 deaths are attributed to excessive natural heat. Many of the deaths are preventable.

Genesis Medical Center emergency physician David Dierks, D.O., offers these tips to avoid being a victim of the heat:

Davenport, IA, June-August 2017 – Chad Pregracke’s Living Lands & Waters (LL&W) needs your help this summer at their MillionTrees Project nursery!   Volunteers of all ages are invited to help pull weeds and get the nursery ready for acorn planting this fall (10.28.17). Lunch will be provided and a free reusable bag is given to participants, who can come and go as they please, at four nursery maintenance events, located at 6000 Eastern Avenue. Times are from 9am-12p.

Rock Island, IL – Summer can be a harsh time in the Quad Cities for many in our community. As the temperature and heat indexes rise, many members of our community struggle to stay cool. Christian Care is dedicated to helping those who are less fortunate by opening its doors as an Emergency Cooling Center when temperatures are 90 degrees and above. Those needing assistance are welcome between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. seven days a week.

(Boise, ID, June 2, 2017) – Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and Interior Secretary Ryan K. Zinke joined forces in Boise, Idaho today at the National Incident Fire Command Center (NIFC) for a tour and briefing on the upcoming wildfire season. Following the events, the secretaries sent a memorandum to wildland fire leadership highlighting the importance of inter-departmental collaboration in protecting communities and managing public lands.

May 17, 2017 (Davenport, Iowa) – The Putnam Museum & Science Center will host a “Pollinators’ Palooza” event May 20 and 21 in partnership with the Iowa State University (ISU) Scott County Extension Master Gardeners. The weekend-long palooza, which will take place on Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 21, from noon to 5 p.m., is designed to educate the public on the continuous importance of pollinators in our environment.

Two local non-profit organizations, The Quad City Botanical Center and Family Resources are partnering to plant a 1,200 square foot community vegetable garden on Davenport's East Side on the grounds of the Annie Wittenmyer Complex. With the generous support of The Amy Helpenstell Foundation, Arconic, and Eastern Iowa Community College, this garden will be planted Saturday, May 13th.

COAL VALLEY, Ill. (May 8, 2017) – Tammy Schmidt, Niabi Zoo assistant director, will speak about husbandry, reproduction, groupings and habitats at the first ever international Giant Otter Workshop at the Zoológico de Cali in Colombia, South America, May 9 to May 12.

West Branch, Iowa— Each Sunday in June and July a park ranger leads visitors through the 81-acre tallgrass prairie at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. Join to learn how and why the National Park Service is reconstructing this endangered habitat as part of the landscape commemorating Herbert Hoover's life, and what is in store for the future. The walks begin at the tallgrass prairie observation deck by the gravesite parking lot at 9:30 a.m.

PORT BYRON, Ill. (May 3, 2017) – The Rock Island County Forest Preserve District will open the first of a three-part multi-use trail system at Dorrance Park at 307 Agnes St., Port Byron, Ill., on Sunday, May 7.
