DES MOINES, IA - U.S. Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt announced today that the Southern District of Iowa collected $5,607,017.30 in criminal and civil actions in Fiscal Year 2013. Of this amount, $4,094,883.39 was collected in criminal actions and $1,512,133.91was collected in civil actions.

Additionally, the Southern District of Iowa worked with other U.S. Attorney's Offices and components of the Department of Justice to collect an additional $4,108,435.35 in civil cases pursued jointly with these offices.

Attorney General Eric Holder announced today that the Justice Department collected approximately $8.1 billion in civil and criminal actions in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2013. The more than $8 billion in collections in FY 2013 represents nearly three times the appropriated $2.76 billion budget for the 94 U.S. Attorney's offices and the main litigating divisions in that same period.

"The Department's enforcement actions help to not only ensure justice is served, but also deliver a valuable return to the taxpayer," said Attorney General Holder. "It is critical that Congress provide the resources  necessary to match the Department's mounting caseload. As these figures show, supporting our federal prosecutors is a sound investment."

The U.S. Attorneys' Offices, along with the department's litigating divisions, are responsible for enforcing and collecting civil and criminal debts owed to the U.S. and criminal debts owed to federal crime victims. The law requires defendants to pay restitution to victims of certain federal crimes who have suffered a physical injury or financial loss. While restitution is paid to the victim, criminal fines and felony assessments are paid to the department's Crime Victims' Fund, which distributes the funds to state victim compensation and victim assistance programs.

The largest civil collections were from affirmative civil enforcement cases, in which the United States recovered government money lost to fraud or other misconduct or collected fines imposed on individuals and/or corporations for violations of federal health, safety, civil rights or environmental laws. In addition, civil debts were collected on behalf of several federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Health and Human Services, Internal Revenue Service, Small Business Administration and Department of Education. Additionally, the U.S. Attorney's office in the Southern District of Iowa, working with
partner agencies and divisions, collected $2,377,955 in administrative and judicial asset forfeiture actions in FY 2013. Forfeited assets are deposited into the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund and are used to restore funds to crime victims and for a variety of law enforcement purposes. $862,737 in forfeited assets was returned to victims during FY 2013, and $543,406 was equitably shared with state and local law enforcement agencies.

New Study Finds We're Suffering a National Friendship Crisis

Most Americans (75 percent!) are not satisfied with their friendships; 63 percent lack confidence in even their closest friends; and almost half of us would choose to have deeper friendships rather than more friends.

Those are the findings of a new study, The State of Friendship in America 2013, by Lifeboat Friends at Their Best and Sea Change Strategies and Edge Research.

"Strong, trusting friendships are crucial to our sense of peace, happiness and well-being," says Dawna Hetzler, a speaker, women's mentor (and mentoree), and author of the new book, "Walls of a Warrior: Conquering the Fears of Our Hearts" (www.DawnaHetzler.com).

"But many of us, women in particular, build so many walls around our hearts to protect ourselves, we can never open ourselves to all the possible relationships we could have. Or, we do allow some people in, but we keep them at arm's length."

Strong friendships do make us happier, according to the new study. Forty-nine percent of people with seven or more close friends strongly agreed that they feel happy most of the time, while only 24 percent of people with just one good friend, and 19 percent with no friends, could say the same.

"You have to know and trust a person before you allow them into your heart, because when you open yourself up, you become vulnerable," says Hetzler. "We all build walls to protect ourselves from hurt, fear, rejection, disapproval and other painful emotions, and that's natural. Some walls are healthy. But the invisible walls we're often not even aware of prevent us from experiencing the honest, real relationships that can benefit us in so many ways."

Hetzler shares some of what she learned working with Jericho Girls, the women's group she founded that focuses on dismantling unhealthy walls:

  • First, identify the walls you have. We build walls in response to many things - real and perceived threats, fears, conditioning, rejection, Hetzler says. Many of us put up walls to hide our weaknesses; if you have trouble asking for help, this may be you! Jericho Girls members learned that acknowledging and being honest about their weaknesses allowed them to grow stronger. And that asking for help from friends offers those friends the gratification of giving. Making a list of your walls and understanding why they're there is a good place to start the process.
  • If the wall is unhealthy, identify the steps necessary to dismantle it. Sometimes we erect walls to protect ourselves from ourselves, Hetzler notes. "One of my walls revolved around being needed too much," she says. "I tend to take on a lot, then exhaust myself getting it all done." She realized she built a wall to prevent people from seeing that she really cannot do it all, and she pushed away those she feared might demand too much of her time and energy. She dealt with that wall by setting limits with herself and others. "I say no when I need to, which allows me to build friendships instead of pushing people away."
  • Arm yourself with words of inspiration. Powerful words help when we need positive reinforcement or reassurance when the way ahead looks scary. Hetzler has found that calling upon a quotation that she believes in provides both. "Write down the quotes, Bible verses or other inspiration that have great meaning for you," she says. Each day, read one, reflect upon the meaning, pray or meditate, and contemplate the message it holds for you. "These words will stick with you, and you'll have them to call upon when you need them," she says.

Creating deeper, honest friendships begins with opening our hearts to others, Hetzler says.

"When you begin taking down the walls, you'll find you're more at peace with yourself," she says. "And that allows you to develop the wonderful relationships that come from trust and sharing."

About Dawna Hetzler: Dawna Hetzler owns a real estate firm and is an author and speaker focusing on women's connection groups and retreats. She's also a Bible study teacher and speaker for Stonecroft Ministries. She wrote "Walls of Warriors" based on her experiences with Jericho Girls - a group of women who meets to discuss the walls they build around their hearts that inhibit relationships with others.

IowaHousingSearch.org lets users list and search for rental housing in Iowa for FREE

DES MOINES - The Iowa Finance Authority today announced the launch of IowaHousingSearch.org, a free housing locator web site that gives renters, landlords, housing professionals, and social service providers access to real-time rental housing information. The web site already has approximately 20,000 rental units listed representing 250 Iowa landlords and continues to grow rapidly. The project is powered by Socialserve.com, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to affordable housing across the nation.

IowaHousingSearch.org offers landlords free advertising for their properties, including critically needed affordable and accessible units, while helping renters find housing to fit their specific needs. Listings are linked to interactive maps and can include pictures and information about nearby amenities such as parks, schools and hospitals. Special features for renters include quick links to housing resources as well as rent-affordability and moving-cost calculators.

"IowaHousingSearch.org will provide a fast and easy way to locate rental housing information and related resources," said Iowa Finance Authority Executive Director Dave Jamison. "This tool will also be a valuable asset for property owners and a great resource for our communities."

IowaHousingSearch.org is also a powerful resource during times of disaster, putting current housing information at the fingertips of disaster victims. "IowaHousingSearch.org sets an excellent example for disaster preparedness with a proactive approach to identifying and listing emergency rental housing," said Pat Hall, Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Recovery Division Administrator. "When a crisis causes housing loss in Iowa, this resource will be in place and ready to quickly help displaced individuals. IowaHousingSearch.org will give us the tools we need to find available replacement housing throughout the state."

To list or search for housing on IowaHousingSearch.org, go online at IowaHousingSearch.org any time, or call a toll-free, bilingual call center at 1.877.428.8844, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Central Time.

WASHINGTON–Yesterday Forbes released its third annual 30 Under 30 list, a tally of the brightest stars in 15 different fields under the age of 30. National Education Association Student Program (NEA-SP) Chair David Tjaden has been named to the list for the education sector for the second year in a row.

"The NEA Student Program has continued to evolve and improve as THE pre- professional organization for educators; the Forbes honor is not directly reflective of my individual work, but is a testament of the impact our 60,000 members have in each of their communities," said Tjaden.

Tjaden, 26, lobbied several members of Congress last fall on keeping student loan interest rates low and led a group of NEA Student Program members and others in a college affordability rally on Capitol Hill. His goal during his two-year term is to highlight the voices of future educators and to ensure their voices are heard and valued in teacher prep programs, college affordability, and public education.

"We want the best and brightest college students in the country to join us in our teacher preparation programs," said Tjaden. "But we know it's difficult to recruit those students into the teaching profession when they are going to be graduating with tens of thousands of dollars in debt. As a future teacher, the last thing I want to see is one of my students putting aside a college acceptance letter because they know they cannot afford to be shackled by student loan debt for the rest of their lives."

Tjaden continues to emphasize the importance of activism when delivering speeches and in meetings with NEA-SP and National Education Association members throughout the country.

"We are at a pivotal point in the discussion of who should lead the conversation about the direction of education in this country," said Tjaden. "Being a great teacher now also means being an advocate for our profession. It is my goal to ensure that our 60,000 members have the knowledge, skills, and tenacity to be the voices and leaders of our profession."

David is originally from the rural town of Titonka, Iowa and has spent the last 6 years at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in Political Science, he continued on and graduated with a master's in Social Studies education in May 2012. His term ends in July of 2014.

The NEA Student Program was founded in 1937 and now has nearly 60,000 members representing over 1,100 college/university campus chapters in 50 states.
