MOLINE, ILLINOIS -  Thirty years ago, WQPT, Quad Cities PBS went on the air for the first time with four hours of programming. Nancy Reagan hosted "The Chemical People," and the station held a televised talk back. Since that day Nov. 3, 1983, WQPT has expanded its broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week on its main channel (Mediacom 10 - Ch. 24) and its secondary channel, MHz Worldview.

The station's founding general manager was Robert Fletcher, who spent 10 years laying the groundwork for local public television and headed the station in its early years. Fred Marino followed him from 1986 to1992 and Jerry Sandler from 1992 to 1994. Moss Bresnahan expanded the station's impact in the community, and Rick Best, who started as a WQPT volunteer, business manager and assistant general manager took over general manager duties in 1997, retiring in 2012. Mary Pruess has served as general manager since April 2013.

Milestones in the station's history include the transfer of the WQPT license from Black Hawk College to Western Illinois University in 2010, the conversion to digital transmission in 2005 and the addition of the Sterling/Rock Falls transmitter in March 1991.

"We always seek ways to improve on what we are doing, both on television and in our community," said Pruess. "We are grateful for the support of so many who have made this milestone possible. Our volunteers, partners, sponsors and our faithful members have made it possible for WQPT to reach 30 years, and with their continued support, the sky is the limit."

The WQPT- exclusive series, "The Cities with Jim Mertens," began in 2009. Other long-run series that have called WQPT home include "Perspective" and "Life and Time," hosted by Susan McPeters. "Get Movin,'" "Artists in Profile," "Originals at RME," "Recipe Re-Do," and "Dining In" were produced by WQPT, and "Romper Room," produced by WQAD, found a home in the late afternoon on WQPT. Throughout the years, the station has produced documentaries like "3 Esthers" and "Chad Pregracke: The River Rescuer," along with such special performances as "The Nutcracker," "Dracula" and "It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play."

WQPT has won numerous national awards including an Emmy nomination for "Scattergood," two CINE Golden Eagle Awards, Telly Awards, the PBS Sterling Award and others.

While education was always at the core of the WQPT mission, the "Ready to Learn Initiative" began in 1995. Since that time, WQPT has distributed more than 123,000 books to low literate, low-income children and has conducted more than 1,600 workshops in area schools.

WQPT will air a history of the station, "WQPT: Thirty Years, A Million Thanks," on Friday, November 1 at 7:30 pm and November 2 at 6:30 pm.

Chronicling the rise and fall of Tomas Zurbriggen, Cliff LeCleir's "The Making of a Man" has a compellingly complex vitality and strong moral center

LaCROSSE, Wis. - (Release Date TBD) - The rise and fall of Tomas Zurbriggen is an allegory of change, morality and redemption foretold. Author Cliff LeCleir, concerned about the devaluation of moral fiber in American leaders, molds his flawed protagonist into a person who represents all that is crass, corrupt and wrong in these leaders. The Making of a Man is one of those necessary fictions that seek to alleviate the state of society by embodying it in a sympathetic but flawed hero who struggles to find his moral balance.

Subtitled What Are Little Boys Made Of?, LeCleir's book gives rise to more urgent questions for its readers to mull over: Does the boy make the man? Was Tomas Zurbriggen's upbringing the basis for his lying, cheating and manipulating his way into the presidency of a company? And, is Zurbriggen's case true for the majority of men? By trickery and deceit, Zurbriggen sought to find fulfillment, to find his portion of the American Dream. Yet, as LeCleir pointedly shows, the American Dream is made up of the glorious virtues that made America the first and greatest of modern democracies.  "Tomas did everything, both right and wrong, with great zeal," LeCleir informs his readers in the introduction. LeCleir's allegory ties in with worldly realities; and its moral depth and complex vitality will compel readers' interest in Zurbriggen's story from the start.

Born from morally solid Swiss stock, Tomas' life is carefully observed, as is his more recent family history. It is a background that is moral and Christian to the core. The virtues are observed in this society - virtues that Tomas, in growing up, slowly lets go of. The world comes in and takes hold of his imagination, one that has been tempted by "intelligent temptations" - logically, Tomas sees how he can twist the law, forget about morality in improving his lot and get away with it. It begins his path down into the parable of the prodigal son.

Zurbriggen rises high up in society, but his fall becomes a thrilling pageant of a human being dissected layer by layer, stripped of his material supports to reveal his core, the moral fiber LeCleir sets out to logically prove innate in Tomas Zurbriggen. It is a difficult, if not harsh task, a battle with evil zeitgeist, but Cliff LeCleir comes up with the correct equations and the philosopher's stone that guides Zurbriggen back into the moral fold that his misguided heart has longed for all along. Thus readers will cheer Tomas Zurbriggen on as he finally becomes a real man.

About the Author

Cliff LeCleir's life began in the simplest of ways: on a Wisconsin farm without electricity, running water, or indoor plumbing. As a youngster, he was constantly involved in creating new ventures in hope of enhancing his savings account. He sold pony rides, raised chickens, using his savings to purchase a cow in order to sell her milk for a steadier income. From the sixth grade, his parents expected him to manage his money in order to provide his own clothes, school supplies, and spending money. After graduating from high school, he spent three years in the Army, half of that time as a topographer in Ethiopia. Returning to Wisconsin and civilian life, he married, began college, had three children, and began his first business, all in five years. At the age of 63, he began the fifth business of his career, calling it "his retirement project." Recuperation from hip surgery provided him time to contemplate another venture - writing! His writing is plain, down to earth, and from the heart. His first book, "From the Outhouse to the Moon," has stories surrounding the early days of his life. The second book, "Escape from Tyranny," is an emotional account of a young couple's escape from Germany in the 1790s. His third book, "The Making of a Man," is a rewrite of a character from ancient Jewish history, placing that character in a contemporary format. LeCleir resides in the rural township of Barre near La Crosse, Wisconsin. His hobbies include using his "toys" (a backhoe, bulldozer and dump truck) to create ponds and waterfalls on his land, cutting wood, teaching adult Bible Classes, and playing racquetball. Now in his 70s he quips, "I have a plan. When I'm 80, I'm going to slow down-I don't care what anyone says!"

Author David Alan Cohen Unveils a Hilarious Tale of Adventure, Adultery and Treachery in New Book

'If It Flies, Floats, or Flirts...turn the page' chronicles the lives of wealthy and mischievous individuals who were tempted to follow this lifestyle and ultimately face the consequences of their decision.

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - (Release Date TBD) - If It Flies, Floats, or Flirts...turn the page by David Alan Cohen is a humorous and engaging account of dysfunctional and bored wealthy males who subscribe to this lifestyle and the potential repercussions that ensue as shared by the author who has been an employee and confidant to these participants for decades.

The flies, floats and flirts lifestyle of Harp, who prefers to rent women with his famous tagline of 'how much, how long, and when do we get started' is compared to that of Herschel, a wealthy industrialist from the Great White North.  They fly their own seaplanes, are married with children and grandchildren and addicted to male erectile dysfunction medicine.

Herschel seeks women for companionship, be it for weeks, months, or years, introducing all of them as the current 'girlfriend' to his male friends much to the chagrin of his suspicious and ill wife Sadie, who knows he is doing this but can't prove it. Throughout the course of the story, Harp cuts to the chase for sex while Herschel entertains the women in his fleet of aircraft, hoping to score with the multi-mile high club in his jet and savor a victory at sea in the seaplane. His family fears for their inheritance with each new 'girlfriend' he acquires.

Cohen has worked for other wealthy males who fly their own aircraft but can only flirt with women. Acting as tough, alpha males within their own peer group, they are spineless at the thought of losing their fortunes should they ever get caught in any affair. Insanely jealous of Harp and Herschel, they lavish exorbitant sums of money on their aircraft and boats who have become their mistresses.

If It Flies, Floats, or Flirts...turn the page demonstrates that excess time and money leads to mischief and wandering minds turn to the thought of having an affair. This book is a highly interesting volume that reveals money and material possessions cannot always provide happiness and not all that glitters is gold.

SAAMBAA'S PLATFORM PROVEN TO ADD REVENUE IN FIRST MONTH

San Diego, CA. (October 11th) - saambaa recently launched their new mobile entertainment app platform for publishers with five AAN member publications: Pittsburgh City Paper, Tucson Weekly, Style Weekly, Folio Weekly and Jackson Free Press.  The platform allows any publisher to add revenue by creating a powerful mobile app, which showcases local event and entertainment content.  Saambaa's first publisher to launch, Little Village in Iowa City, saw mobile ad sales approaching $5k in their first month; they expect to double that by year-end.

"This product really helps augment the revenue models for these businesses.  We can help them increase mobile revenue by 10X."  Said saambaa CEO and co-founder, Matt Voigt.  "Over 1.5 billion smartphones are used every day and the average user spends over two hours per day on them.  Mobile websites are not enough - Nielsen reports that people prefer using apps over mobile browsers 5-to-1.  This massive structural change in behavior has opened the door for new revenue possibilities for publishers.  Our product helps publishers take advantage of this by providing technical and strategic resources they wouldn't otherwise have access to."

Saambaa does not charge fees for its platform.  Publishers get their own unique, custom-branded iPhone and Android entertainment app as part of a revenue sharing partnership with the Company.   And because it's a revenue-sharing relationship, saambaa acts as an extension of the publisher's team to ensure they're not left alone to navigate the complexities of mobile.

About saambaa:

Saambaa's apps leverage proprietary technology that gives readers the power to share listings with friends using text messages, emails and push notifications - sent by readers to their friends.  Saambaa has deep mobile experience, with technology chosen by Apple from over 500,000 apps and featured in the App Store.  This allows saambaa to be uniquely positioned to help the publishing industry transition into mobile with a best-in-class platform.

The name saambaa is inspired by the Brazilian tradition of music, dance, energy and people coming together - in-person - to have fun.  Download some example publisher apps and discover more about saambaa at www.saambaa.com.

Film's Writer-Producer Explodes 4 Myths About Bodybuilding

Myths abound about the subculture of bodybuilding, a sport that took off with the explosion of the health-and-fitness industry in the 1970s.

Back then, the public knew even less about these extreme and dedicated athletes until the release of a breakthrough docudrama in 1977, "Pumping Iron," produced by Jerome Gary and featuring a champion named Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The film has long fascinated Vlad Yudin, writer, director, producer and principal of The Vladar Co. He has been busy on multiple film projects this year, but right now his focus is the Sept. 20 release of "Generation Iron," created with "Pumping Iron" producer Gary and narrated by Mickey Rourke. (Visit www.generation-iron.com to watch the trailer and get showtimes.)

Yudin spent months with the seven bodybuilders featured in the docudrama as they prepared for the Mr. Olympiad contest. He says he came away with an appreciation of how little the public still knows about the sport and the athletes who so compulsively pursue physical perfection.  For one, many people believe bodybuilding is about size - not true.

"It's about developing symmetry," he says.

Here are four myths he says are rampant in literature about bodybuilders, and why they're not true.

• Myth No. 1: Bodybuilders suffer from "negative body image," or "reverse anorexia." Many observers have written that bodybuilders are driven by an eating disorder known as reverse anorexia: No matter how big they get, when they look in the mirror, they still see a skinny wimp. Not true, says Yudin. "The whole point of this sport is to perfect the physique - the goal is to develop perfect symmetry, not to get as big as you can be. These guys are striving for a perfect score in competition. If they see a weak spot, they're going to work on building that up."

• Myth No. 2. Bodybuilders depend on steroids to achieve results. Steroids do not make champions, Yudin says. Bodybuilding champs are athletes so dedicated to constantly consuming the right nutrients on the right schedule and to working out, it becomes a lifestyle. "People think they're just pumping themselves up with steroids, but bodybuilding is a science that requires effort 100 percent of the time, Yudin says.

• Myth No. 3: Bodybuilders have low self-esteem. For some, this may have been true at one point in their lives, Yudin says. Some experienced bullying; others had acceptance issues. But most now have a healthy, even robust, sense of self-esteem. "You can see it in how they carry themselves. They don't do this because of a lack of confidence," he says. "If they did, they wouldn't be able to go on stage and be judged with such intense scrutiny on their physique. They've put in a lot of work and they know they look good." He gives the example of Phil Heath, one of the seven men featured in his film. Heath grew up as a talented athlete and played basketball for the University of Denver. "He started hitting the gym more to train, and became more interested in bodybuilding than basketball," Yudin says. The two-time Mr. Olympia knew he had talent from the get-go and took advantage of it, he says.

• Myth No. 4: Body builders are socially isolated. They get a rap because they dedicate their life to the gym and their diet, Yudin says. They eat every two to three hours and they're in the gym two to three times a day. You just don't see them out and about very often. "But four of the seven men we featured are married. A fifth lives with the mother of his children, and a sixth got married after we stopped shooting. Their family lives are a big part of the film," Yudin says. While he concedes bodybuilders have to be selfish to a degree in order to maintain their grueling schedule, that doesn't mean they're loners who avoid others.

"Branch Warren is a devoted family man who brings his daughter to competitions," Yudin says. "In the film, you see him carrying his daughter through the back stage."
