For over 72 years, Ross' Restaurant has been a local tradition and landmark in Bettendorf, Iowa.  It has stood the test of time, and has been in the national spotlight more than once with visits from politicians, actors, and athletes.  Now, Ross' is gaining recognition once again, for a healthy change to their popular "diner" menu.??

Best known for their Magic Mountains and plate sized cinnamon rolls, Ross' Restaurant has been making some changes over the past 3 years.  In an effort to serve healthier food, and to support local Iowa farmers, Ross' has been going local!  With local produce, breads, organic eggs, and ground beef already on their menu, now Ross' is adding local sausage and bacon.??

"We've partnered with a 7th generation family sausage company to bring in their all natural, certified gluten free sausage which only contains three ingredients: salt, spices, and pork." Says Melissa Freidhof-Rodgers, manager of Ross' Restaurant and granddaughter of Harold Ross, the original restaurant owner.  "Our customers are like family to us, and it give us great joy to be able to offer them healthier choices while also supporting our hard working local Iowa farmers and local economy."??

"Many of our customer's are noticing the difference in taste and love the idea of local supporting local.  When they find out the food they are eating today is healthier than it used to be, we tell them to consider it our gift to them!" Says Ms. Freidhof-Rodgers.  Customers all seem to agree that the change is good and the food tastes better than ever.??

Other changes Ross' restaurant has made to their menu include chicken and milk that are hormone and antibiotic free, free-range bison burgers, and hand made burgers from ground beef that is delivered fresh from a local packer six days a week.  Enjoy bacon or sausage with your breakfast?  Now Ross' has a third choice:  soy based Morningstar Patties and even all natural turkey sausage.??

To celebrate their healthier menu, and to support the local farmers with whom they have partnered, Ross' is hosting an open house and sausage tasting on December 1st.  Free samples will be available from 9 a.m. To 11 a.m. and customers will be invited to stop in and taste for themselves  the new versions of some old favorites on the menu.

For more information, contact Melissa Freidhof-Rodgers at Ross' Restaurant, 430 14th Street, Bettendorf, Iowa. 563-676-6270rossrestaurant@hotmail.com

The country's best tastes and economic development on the menu in Rock Island

Rock Island, IL - Goombazz Big City Eatzz, a new restaurant experience, is proud to bring some familiar tastes with a side of economic growth to Rock Island, IL.

Featuring a menu that represents famous delicacies from over 30 city centers in the United States, Goombazz is a full service restaurant owned by Brenda "The Brainzz" Brewer along with Sal "Sally Fatzz" Cracco. The restaurant décor is highlighted by elements from a checker cab ceiling to the original "Coast-to-Coast" mural in the party room by artist Matthew T. Chouteau.

Specialties include Chicago Italian Beef, New York kosher-style Corned Beef and Pastrami sandwiches piled high, four different regional styles of pizza on three different types of crust including the "Quadzz Mob" - five square feet of pizza - and 100% all beef hot dogs from Thumann's....The Deli Best.

Brewer and Cracco are also pleased to return a building to the tax base of Rock Island as well as 40 full- and part-time employees. The effort has been aided by the economic development staff of Rock Island in a public-private partnership. The project was supported with a $25,000 low interest business loan and a $3,800 rebate through the city's Façade Improvement program.

"We have been so impressed with the help we have received from Rock Island city staff," said Brewer. "The assistance from all levels of the city has made the relationship with our vendors even better and made it possible to recruit and hire the size of staff we wanted to provide the 'Goombazz' experience."

"The City of Rock Island is excited about the opening of Goombazz as it supports the need for more family dining options in our community," said Jeff Eder, Community & Economic Development Director for the City of Rock Island. "Staff has enjoyed working with Ms. Brewer and Mr. Cracco to make their vision a reality."

Goombazz Big City Eatzz opened October 2012 at the former Godfather's Pizza in Rock Island, IL. Brenda "The Brainzz" Brewer and Sal "Sally Fatzz" Cracco believe nothing says "family" more than a meal at their table.  A "goomba" is a friend and everyone is a friend at Brenda and Sal's place.

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA - Nov. 7, 2012 - While the overall price tag of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner remains steady, with only a 1 percent increase from last year's total meal cost; prices are beginning to creep upward for poultry and meat. As the price of grain for feed continues to inch upward after a drought-stricken harvest, livestock farmers are beginning to make adjustments for the increased costs of feeding those animals.

But those food price hikes shouldn't affect this year's annual fall feast. According to the recent American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Thanksgiving Dinner Price Survey, a family of 10 can enjoy the typical Thanksgiving meal that features a 16-pound turkey, bread stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie and the trimmings for $49.48.

"The Thanksgiving feast remains a real bargain for American families.  The bounty of our flocks and fields can still be put on the table for less than $5 per person," said Dave Miller, director of research and commodity services for the Iowa Farm Bureau.  "Even in the face of weather challenges that cut production of corn and soybeans on many Iowa farms by 30 percent or more, the Thanksgiving meal this year has risen in cost by less than 1 percent."

Turkey accounted for most of the increase in the cost of the dinner. The price for a 16-pound turkey crept up by 66 cents to $22.23, compared to $21.57 last year. The increase is a result of higher consumer demand for turkey, lowered turkey production and higher feed prices.

"The modest increase in the price of this year's Thanksgiving turkey demonstrates the resilience of American turkey producers in the face of drought and higher feed costs," said Miller. "During each of the first 8 months of 2012, U.S. turkey producers increased production and prices were slightly lower than a year ago, but higher prices for feed due to the record-setting drought of 2012 has led them to curtail

production by about 4 percent during October, resulting in the slight increase in price that may be seen as Thanksgiving approaches this year. But we are on the cusp of change regarding seeing higher prices for meat."

This year, there were small increases for the costs of dinner rolls and items used to make the meals. The survey shopping list includes turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of celery and carrots, pumpkin pie with whipped topping and beverages of coffee and milk, in quantities efficient to serve 10 people.

More than 150 volunteer shoppers from 35 states, representing every region in the nation, participated in the annual AFBF Thanksgiving price shopping survey.  The cost of the dinner has steadily climbed in recent years: 2008: $44.61, 2009: $42.91, 2010: $43.47, 2011: $49.20 and 2012: $49.48.
