Credit Island Celebrates Historic Anniversary

During the War of 1812, the battle of Credit Island took place on Sept. 4 and 5, 1814. Join us on August 30, 2014 from 8am - 2pm at Credit Island, 2200 W. River Drive in Davenport for a commemoration for the 200th anniversary of this historic battle.

Niabi Zoo Opens New Animal Exhibit

Coal Valley, IL - August 15, 2014 - Niabi Zoo announced today the opening of a new rainforest-themed animal exhibit in its Jungle Trek Discovery Center. The new exhibit is mixed-species and houses a Linne's Two-Toed Sloth and a pair of Cotton-Top Tamarins.

The new exhibit cost approximately $93,000 to build and was funded through grants from the Scott County Regional Authority, the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust, and funds raised by the Niabi Zoological Society. The exhibit was built by Estes Construction of Davenport, IA. The exhibit is located indoors and features an abundance of natural light provided through expansive windows, live plants, natural soil substrate, rocks, and only a thin wire mesh separating the animals from zoo visitors.

Zoo Director Marc Heinzman says this exhibit is a positive addition to Niabi Zoo. "This new rainforest exhibit is a beautiful and engaging habitat for some truly amazing animals," said Heinzman, "and I think it will be a great addition to our Jungle Trek Discovery Center." Heinzman also said that the goal of the new exhibit is to encourage zoo visitors to learn about the importance of the rainforest and why it should be protected.

Cotton-Top Tamarins (Sanguinus oedipus) are one of the smallest species of primates in the world, with adults weighing less than 1.1 pounds. In the wild, these monkeys are found in the rainforests of northwest Columbia and are listed as a critically endangered species due to habitat loss. Linne's Two-Toed Sloth (Choloepus didactylus), one of the slowest animals on the planet, is native to the rainforests of several South American countries including Columbia, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela and Equador.

Humility of Mary Shelter, Inc. Announces 3rd Annual Night at the Shelter - SleepOut

The Humility of Mary Shelter, Inc. is excited to announce the 3rd Annual Night at the Shelter SleepOut will be held October 3-4, 2014 at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport. The Night at the Shelter SleepOut is designed to bring awareness about homelessness in the Quad City community and raise funds to help provide beds and support for homeless persons served at the Humility of Mary Shelter, Inc.

Gather your family and friends and join us for an enlightening, fun-filled night to help fight homelessness in the QC area. Participate in the "Build Your Own Shelter" contest and stay the night in what you build. Activities throughout the evening will include : live music, games, food, and an outdoor movie on the Modern Woodmen Park Jumbo screen. General admission to this event is $10 per person, although we hope you will help us raise additional funds by asking everyone you know to sponsor your efforts to help the homeless. No amount is too small and a $10 donation will support a bed for one night. Your participation in this event will help ensure the continuation of shelter services to homeless men and women in the QC area well into the future. This Week in Downtown Davenport: 8/14 - 8/20

Can you taste the BBQ yet? The Quad-Cities' premiere musical festival featuring top national bands and award winning BBQ right along the Mississippi is THIS WEEKEND! With headliners Los Lonely Boys, North Mississippi Allstars, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, and many more, River Roots Live is sure to make their 10th Anniversary one to remember. Come on down to LeClaire Park Friday and Saturday for live music, food & drink, and one heck of a good time.

The Figge is bustling with activities this week, starting today when Liam O'Neill takes over the plaza to start his work on a wood-turning sculpture from a large tree trunk over the course of four weeks. The unveiling of the finished piece is scheduled for September 14, so be ready! Tomorrow, head out for a demonstration on the plaza while he works. On Saturday, welcome the opening of a new exhibit, Living Proof, celebrating the creative spirit of cancer survivors. The exhibit will be open until October 26.

Think you can rank among the top contestants in a power lifting contest? Test your strength Saturday at the Quad City Strength & Fitness Expo over at the RiverCenter. Presented by the Quad City Strongman, here's your opportunity to participate in various strength-related contests, attend a mix of seminars on health and fitness, and peruse health-oriented vendors!

Downtown Davenport continues to develop, and we couldn't be more excited! A $50M plan is in the works to create a new urban campus for EIICC which includes restoring the Capitol Theatre for a movie theater, building residential units and retail in the KAHL Building, and renovating the former bank buildings at 3rd and Main/Brady for the school campus. We are ecstatic to assist with EICC and Restoration St. Louis' developments downtown and urge your support as the project moves forward in its process.
