Rock Island, IL: For more and more adults, libraries are becoming go-to places to learn about new skills and technology, especially as services like music downloading and free eBook checkouts introduce additional ways to use library services and materials.

The Rock Island Public Library Adult Services department is no exception, offering 11 different events this summer where adults can learn about using library eBooks and audiobooks, downloading music and using either an Apple iPad or Android tablet computer.  Classes start next week and include the following free programs:

Getting Started Downloading Library eBooks & eAudiobooks: Learn how to use the Library's free download services to get eBooks and eAudiobooks to your computer, portable listening devices, tablets, and eReaders.

Going beyond technology, the Rock Island Library has one more opportunity for adults to work on an important life skill: Getting organized! Professional organizer and national speaker Mona Brantley, owner of the business "Organize That," will present 5 Steps to Getting Organized on Tuesday, August 20 at 6:30 pm at the Main Library, 401 19th Street. Learn the one difference between organized and disorganized people, while understanding why you may have trouble getting or staying organized. Participants will both laugh and learn as Brantley provides logical and helpful hints, tips, and tricks that will make a difference in your life.

Start your weekend off with some live outdoor music, refreshing drinks, and good company when River Music Experience kicks off Friday Live at 5! Sponsored by TAG Communications, this week's event features the Ellis Kell Band. On Saturday, RME gives you an excuse to wear your PJ's out of the house during their Dress Up and Dance Series: Pajama Jam! Enjoy contests, giveaways, and live music by Have Your Cake and The Candymakers.  Tonight, catch a great all female act visting from Austin, The Trishas.  On Wednesday, RME will host a phenomenal up and coming musician from St. Louis, Pokey Lafarge.
The Figge has activities for all crowds this weekend! Middle school students can explore the drawing of pop art during the Art in the Middle workshops. For the older crowd, enjoy fun studio art activities paired with a glass of wine and light hors d'oeuvres during Wine & Art tonight. There's even a chance to bond with the whole family by heading to the new Beyond the Classroom exhibit or participating in tonight's interactive Zumba Fitness class.
Awarding more than $50,000 each year in scholarships, the Miss Iowa Scholarship Program continues to be a great asset for the state.   Come show your support at the Adler Theatre this Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Also, don't forget that tickets for the July 13th  Grace Potter & the Nocturnals show are still on sale.  Get 'em while they last!
With June already here, Father's Day is right around the corner! In need of a unique way of celebrating the holiday? Join the Quad Cities River Bandits on Sunday, June 16th, as they host pre-game catch in the outfield and their second annual Father's Day Cookout on the Sky Deck! The Quad Cities Cruisers, the Premiere Local Car Enthusiast Club, will celebrate their 31st Year in a row of hosting their annual Open Run Car Show for Charity.  This year's event is at the JC Penney Parking Lot of South Park Mall, Moline, IL, from 4p-9p.  This year's charities that the Quad Cities Cruisers are working for are:  ARROWHEAD RANCH, VIETNAM VETERANS Chapter 299, and QC CRIMESTOPPERS.

Come see hundreds of classic cars, hot rods and specialty vehicles at this event!!!  There will be lots of Vendors as well!

Admission for spectators is FREE.

Get tickets for the 2013 Mississippi Valley Blues Festival in advance and save some money!  Tickets for the three-day event, July 4-6 at Davenport's LeClaire Park, are $20 per day at the gate.  But through June 30, you can get advance tickets for $15.50 per day at Hy-Vee stores in the Quad Cities, Clinton, and Muscatine.

And, for the first time ever, advance tickets will be available online ($15 plus a service fee), through PayPal at the MVBS website:  www.mvbs.org.  Just go to the Festival tab.

Advance $15 tickets are also available at The Muddy Waters in Bettendorf, Rascals in Moline, Martini's on the Rock in Rock Island, and at the Blues Society office in Davenport (call first: 563-32-BLUES).

Rock Island Library teen reading programs and free events are following the "Beneath the Surface" summer reading theme, so there's plenty of treasure hunting, zombies and even a little "cake archeology" to dig into for teens ages 12 to 18.
The teen program officially kicks off Friday, June 7 with a free "Teen Feature," which includes a classic movie, free popcorn, and the chance to both pick up the teen reading bingo card entry and cross off a square for attending a teen library program. The event takes place from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street, Rock Island.  Additional free events for teens this month include a:
  • Library Treasure Hunt from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 13 at the Main Library, 401 19th Street. Teens will follow a trail of clues to uncover treasure and win prizes.
  • Teen Iron Chef contest from 6:00 to 7:30 pm on Tuesday, June 18 at the Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road, Rock Island. Working with a stack of ingredients, teens will whip up a culinary masterpiece to become the library's next prize-winning chef.
  • Teen Gaming Night from 6:00 to 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 20 at the Main Library, 401 19th Street. Teens can play Xbox 360 with Kinect, Wii and board games.
  • Zombie Night, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 27, at the Main Library, 401 19th St. Dig into your chance to survive the zombie invasion by learning how to create a Zombie Preparedness Plan, apply zombie make-up for either camouflage or fun and enjoy a classic zombie movie and snacks.
·         Cake Archeology program, from noon to 1:00 pm on Tuesday, July 2 at the Southwest Branch. Archeology is in layers, and so are cakes! Teens will learn some simple cake decorating techniques and build their own creations.
All teen events are for ages 12 to 18 and are free.

The 29th annual Mississippi Valley Blues Festival is coming up July 4 through 6 at Davenport's LeClaire Park.  Volunteers are still needed for all shifts July 3 through 7, including admission gate, beer tent, set up and tear down, and backstage hospitality.  Over 200 volunteers are needed.

Volunteers receive free admission to the Blues Festival as well as a souvenir festival t-shirt.  Priority is given to Mississippi Valley Blues Society members.  "Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Blues Festival," says Patty Britt, volunteer coordinator.  "The Mississippi Valley Blues Festival is the only major blues festival in the nation that's produced by a volunteer organization, the MVBS.  We rely on volunteers to help with all aspects of the festival."
