" The Genealogy of Morals and Nietzsche's Method "

An exploration of the Nietzsche's method through the comments of several analytic philosophers including, Danto, Schacht, and Foot on the Genealogy of Morals.  Nietzsche's method is surprisingly modern.  And the modern world may owe more to his critique of Christianity than is commonly acknowledged.  His method may be what we need to get through modern times.  Our study will be in complete agreement with our previous consciousness and end times studies.

Explore the Swedish Novel, British Writing Nov. 5 & 12

In October sessions of the 16th Annual Frieze Lecture Series at Rock Island Library, Augustana College professors considered the generational impacts on how people perceive their ethnic identity and shown how African cultures use ceremonial objects and textiles to reinforce social lessons, spiritual connections and status.

Two remaining lectures in November will explore global connections in literature. Presentations begin at 2:00 pm in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street, and are free and open to the public.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, visiting professor Dr. Benjamin
Mi  er-Cruz, of the Augustana College department of German and Scandinavian, will speak on the exploding popularity of the Swedish Crime Novel.
From works such as "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by the late Steig Larsson to the Wallander novels by Henning Mankell, what is behind the huge popularity of violent crime fiction in a relatively tranquil national culture? Novels by Camilla Läckberg, the Swedish author of "The Hidden Child" and "The Lost Boy" have been translated into 33 languages.

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, Prof. Katie Hanson, Augustana Education Department, will speak on one of Britain's foremost authors, Japanese-born Kazuo Ishiguro. Hanson will consider how the author's background as somewhat of a cultural outsider influenced his perceptions of the Western world. Ishiguro has become one of the most celebrated contemporary fiction authors in the English-speaking world, receiving four Mann Booker writing prize nominations, and winning the 1989 award for his novel, The Remains of the Day. His 2005 novel, Never Let Me Go was the common summer reader for this year's entering class. Find out why!

This year's theme,  "It IS a Small World After All: Globalism's Impact on Literature, Art and Culture" was chosen to illustrate the global connections between the humanities.

Fundraising dinner supports Big Brothers Big Sisters and children facing adversity

October 29, 2013 Clinton, IA: One of the Midwest's best lounge acts, the Midwest Dueling Pianos, returns to entertain the guests on November 23 during the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clinton's annual fundraising dinner.

The Dueling Pianos fundraiser, in it's 3rd year, helps raise funds to start something to change the life of an area child forever.  The event includes a buffet dinner featuring carved sirloin, pork loin and more; a 3 hour interactive and comedic dueling pianos show; plus a silent auction and dessert dash.   Some of the silent auction items include a getaway to Chicago, Walt Disney World tickets and even signed music paraphernalia from Charity Fundraising.  All the proceeds help Big Brothers Big Sisters provide children facing adversity in Clinton County and Fulton, IL with staff-supported, long-term, one-to-one mentoring friendships.

"After the success of last year's event and all the great compliments I heard, it was easy inviting the Midwest Dueling Pianos team back for this year's dinner," said Kellie Hillis, Executive Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters.  "If you missed them last year, then you won't want to miss out this year.  We've made improvements and additions, so it's sure to be a fun evening."

Tickets are $50 a person and are available for purchase at www.bbbsclinton.org, by emailing director@bbbsclinton.org or by calling Big Brothers Big Sisters at 563-243-4223.

The Ascentra Credit Union Scholarship Competition has expanded to offer a total of $10,000 in scholarships to assist members planning to further their education starting the 2014 - 2015 school year.   There will now be a total of ten scholarships which will be awarded to students as follows: Five $1,000 scholarships for high school students planning to enter college. Five $1,000 scholarships for members age 19 or over, considered non-traditional or continuing education students. On behalf of our board of directors and staff we are very excited to announce the expansion of our Ascentra Scholarship Programs.  This is a great opportunity to help more of our members achieve their goals through furthering their education," said President & CEO Dale Owen. The scholarship entrants will be judged on a 500 word essay on the topic, "Credit Unions were founded on the premise of people helping people.  If it were up to you, how would you let the world know of this founding philosophy?"  All entries are judged on their essay, resume, awards, extracurricular activities, volunteer services and work experience.  Deadline for the Ascentra Scholarship Competition is March 1, 2014.  Applications and official rules may be picked up at any of our branches or found online at www.ascentra.org/scholarships. Awarding a total of $10,000 in scholarships is another way Ascentra Credit Union recognizes that financial planning and education is essential to lifetime success for our members and community.
