Rock Island Library Offers Free Shred Day on Thursday, April 25

Rock Island, IL: In the minute it takes you to read this sentence, 19 people will fall victim to identity theft, according to Trans Union credit bureau. To help you keep your personal information private, the Rock Island Public Library will offer a free Community Shred Day next week.

The 6th annual drive-up and drop-off event on Thursday, April 25 runs from 3:30 to 5:30 pm outside the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street. Participants should pull up along the south side of the library, entering from 20th Street onto the one-way alley. Representatives from Document Destruction and Recycling Services will be on hand to take custody of documents. All materials will be secured in locked bins and shredded in bulk under monitored conditions at the DDRS plant in Davenport. The service is free and open to anyone, regardless of library affiliation or city of residence.

The Rock Island Library collected 5,192 pounds of paper at its 2012 Shred Day event. Additional library Shred Days are available at the Davenport Fairmount Branch Library on Saturday, April 20, Bettendorf Public Library on April 24 and Moline Public Library on April 27. The projects are part of Money Smart Week Quad Cities. For additional events, please visit www.moneysmartweek.org.

Document Destruction and Recycling Services, an affiliate of City Carton Recycling, has provided confidential materials destruction services since February 1996.

Niabi Zoo Announces Party for the Planet Event

Coal Valley, IL - April 17, 2013 - Niabi Zoo announced today that it will be holding its annual Earth Day celebration, Party for the Planet, on Sunday, April 21. The event, which will be held from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Zoo, will feature a variety of activities and information to help both kids and adults alike learn how they can make every day Earth Day.

This year's Party for the Planet theme is "Habitats at Home," and the event will focus on the many ways in which Quad City residents can help the countless wildlife habitats that surround them on a daily basis. Niabi Zoo will be distributing 150 conifer tree saplings for attendees to take home and plant, as well as 250 limited edition Niabi Zoo 50th Anniversary reusable grocery bags. The reusable bags can be used in place of disposable plastic bags which frequently end up in landfills. Zoo guests will also learn what they can do in their own backyards to create and sustain vital habitats for native wildlife.

Niabi Zoo will also be supporting the conservation of Monarch butterflies in a variety of ways. Zoo staff and volunteers will be distributing seeds from the milkweed plant, which is vital for the growth and development of Monarch butterflies. Event attendees will also have a chance to learn about the amazing Annual Great Migration of Monarch butterflies, in which millions of these beautiful creatures travel thousands of miles. Researchers have been tagging and tracking these butterflies in order to learn more about their incredible journey.

Niabi Zoo will be open from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Regular admission rates will apply.

REP. SMIDDY HOSTING COMMUNITY ELECTRONICS RECYCLING, SHRED DAY

PORT BYRON, IL - To help protect local residents and business owners from identity theft, state Rep. Mike Smiddy (D-Hillsdale) is hosting a free community shred day and electronics recycling drive on Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds located at 4200 Archer Dr. in East Moline.

"Properly destroying documents that contain personal information is a smart way to protect against identity theft," said Smiddy. "Aside from the inconvenience, identity theft can threaten the financial security of an entire family. This community shred event makes it easy to get rid of these documents safely to help prevent any unwanted invasion of privacy."

Residents can bring old bank statements, tax returns, pay stubs, receipts, credit card applications, old bills and other documents that contain sensitive personal information to be safely shredded and disposed. All documents should be free of paperclips, staples and other bindings.

Electronics recycling is available courtesy of the Rock Island County Waste Management Agency and Bi-State Regional Commission. Most electronic items are accepted, but residents should not bring household appliances, curling irons, terminals or batteries. All items should have any batteries removed before being recycled.

"I encourage area residents to take advantage of this free service," Smiddy said.

A NIGHT OF TRIVIA TO BENEFIT HOMELESS CHILDREN

The Development Committee of Humility of Mary Housing invites everyone to an evening of trivia games, a chance to bid on some exciting silent auction items and, above all to help homeless children have a brighter future. Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. is a supportive housing program for single parent families who have experienced homelessness.

The games start at 7 pm, Friday, April 26, at the Golden Leaf, 2903 E. Kimberly Rd, Davenport, doors open at 6 pm.

It's National Library Week: Celebrate Libraries with Us!

Communities Matter at Your Library" is the theme of National Library Week, April 14-20, and to celebrate, the Rock Island Public Library is bringing together varying interests, services, and communities of learners and readers.

 

Take a Pass! Two new cultural and attraction passes became available just this week for checkout at the Rock Island Main, 30/31 and Southwest Branch Libraries. You can now checkout a free family pass for:

 

  • The Figge Art Museum in Davenport - admits four
  • Niabi Zoo in Coal Valley - admits two adults and up to 4 children, and
  • The Quad City Botanical Center - admits 4

Passes check out for seven days, and must be picked up and returned in person at the issuing library branch. There is a $1 per day fee if passes are not returned on time.

 

A new awareness service from Prairie State Legal Services also started this week at the Main Library, 401 19th Street. Trained volunteers from Prairie State Legal Services will be available from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays on the 2nd floor of the library to offer information and assistance with navigating public benefits for food, cash, medical assistance, disability and township assistance. Prairie State Legal Services volunteers cannot offer legal advice.

Captain Braid Beard (Janos Horvath), from the Circa 21 Dinner Playhouse's new musical adventure, will stop by to help read stories, talk like a pirate and help with pirate crafts for ages birth to five. The musical is based on the popular children's book of the same name, by Melinda Long.
  • 4:00 pm: Lego Time, Rock Island Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road. Make something fun for display at the library with Lego-brand building blocks.

Later in the week, on Friday, April 19, join us for a dinosaur storytime at 10:30 am at the Rock Island Main Library Children's Room. Free story and dinosaur activity, especially for ages birth to five.

Annual Spring Flea Market, Antique, and Collectible Show

Make plans now to attend the Annual Spring Flea Market, Antique, and Collectible Show held on Sunday, April 28th at the Jackson County Fairgrounds in Maquoketa, Iowa.

The show has been in existence for 26 years and is one of Iowa's largest shows with over 150 sellers both inside the Pearson Memorial Center and outside on the fairgrounds.

The hours of the show are from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM.  Admission is only $3, with anyone 10 years
and under free.  Parking is also free.  For buyers wanting to get an early start, early bird shoppers are welcome between the hours of 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM for an admission of $10 per person.

The Jackson County Fairgrounds is located at 1212 East Quarry Street on the far east side of

Moline Library Program: Gettysburg: One Woman's War

Michele LaRue, a professional performer appearing in period costume, will dramatically recite three stories from Elsie Singmaster's 1913 collection, Gettysburg: Stories of the Red Harvest and the Aftermath centering on the imagined life of Mary Bowman, a Civil War widow at the Moline Public Library, 3210 41st Street on Saturday, May 4 at 2:30 P.M. in the meeting rooms.

Elsie Singmaster (1879-1958) was a gifted short story writer and author of 42 books.  Her numerous stories, mostly forgotten today, appeared regularly in American literary journals and popular magazines beginning in 1905 and ending in the early 1940's. Singmaster's Gettysburg stories convey a powerful, personal sense of how war touches a life.

A native of Chicago, Michele LaRue earned her degree in Acting at the University of Kansas, and makes her home in New Jersey, just across the Hudson from the Great White Way. She has worked often with The East Lynne Company?uniquely founded to produce plays of the Long 19th Century?with which she began developing her own singular repertoire.

April 13th - Zion Lutheran Church hosting Benefit for Norman Sawyer at Princeton, Iowa Fire Station Princeton. Dinner from 4:00 P.M to 7:00 P.M.. Live auction and entertainment to follow. Tickets are available at Iowa locations of the Blackhawk Bank and Trust. The cost is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children 6 to 12 years old (5 and under free. life-long resident of Scott County, Norman has led an active farmer's life raising beef cattle. Sawyer Beef is a staple at Davenport's Farmer's Freight House Market.  The family is actively involved in Zion Lutheran Church and the community of Princeton.   Norman graduated from North Scott in 1964 and Iowa State University in 1968.  He then served in the U. S. Navy.  On April 19, 2012, Norman broke his neck in a farm accident. He was airlifted to a neuro-trauma hospital in Rockford, Illinois.  In critical condition, Norman was paralyzed, on a ventilator and unable to speak or swallow. He had three surgeries to stabilize his neck. Norman spent six months undergoing intensive rehabilitation at the Minneapolis VA Spinal Cord Injury Center.   After a year of rehabilitation and recovery, Norman is finally returning to the family farm.  However, their home requires extensive renovations to be handicapped accessible:  ramps, wheelchair lift, handicapped bathroom, ceiling lift, etc.  The purpose of the benefit is to raise funds to help defray the cost of the renovations to the Sawyer home. Award-Winning Poet in QC for Poetry Month

Rivermont is thrilled to welcome award-winning Chicago poet Elise Paschen to campus Friday, April 19th in celebration of Poetry Month.

Elise joins us for an entire day devoted to poetry, including:

  • 2 presentations by Elise Paschen for Rivermont students
  • Rebecca Wee, published poet and English Professor at Augustana, along with upper-level Augustana students, will lead activities including:
    • Interpreting famous authors through a pop-culture persona
    • Incorporating science terminology into poetry
    • Composing poetry in response to sounds - kazoos, ukulele, banjo
    • Exercises in renga, the paired exchange of Japanese tanka or haiku
  • Rivermont faculty-led poetry recitations and workshops
  • On-campus book sale hosted by Barnes & Noble
  • Book signing and reception on the South Patio of the Historic Bettendorf Mansion

Elise Paschen is the co-founder of Poetry in Motion, a nation-wide program which places poetry in subways and buses, putting "poetry at the crossroads of American life."  She is the author of Bestiary, Infidelities (Winner of the Nicholas Roerich Poetry Prize), and Houses: Coasts, as well as editor of The New York Times best-selling anthologies Poetry Speaks to Children and Poetry Speaks Who I Am.
