Meet "the Angel of the Warsaw Ghetto" Oct. 1

Irena Sendler: Angel of the Warsaw Ghetto. Tuesday, Oct. 1st, 6:30 to 7:30 pm,

As a Polish Catholic social worker during WWII, Irena Sendler risked her life to save others. With ingenuity, calmness and courage, she was responsible for rescuing 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto. Irena never thought of herself as hero, and said she simply did what needed to be done, and followed her heart. In this 60-minute performance and question and answer session, Judy Winnick will portray this extraordinary woman.

 

Event presented in partnership with the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities.

Library users have until October 5, 2013 to complete an online survey that will provide the library with input on why they do or do not use libraries, the services they find most beneficial, and their feelings about the role of the library in their community. Explore Illinois Mining History

Uprisings: Illinois Miners Revolt! Wednesday, Oct. 9th, 6:30 to 7:30pm, Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street. IllinoisRoad Scholar Rosemary Feurer will discuss the role of miners throughout the state, incorporating the lost history of African-American miners, and the first successful miners uprising in 1897-1898. Also, learn how downstate miners during 1894-1935 created a culture that led to an uprising against their union, mining corporations, and state and federal officials.

This one-hour class starts with the very basic lessons on computers and how to start using them. Registration is required - space is limited. The Imagination of Edgar Allen Poe

E. A. POE: Edgar Allan Poe's Imagination!, a one-man show on the work of Edgar Allen Poe with Dan Haughey  will be presented Monday, Oct. 14, 6:00 pm at the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street.

 

Actor Dan Haughey becomes a modern literary critic for a prominent newspaper as he interprets excerpts from some of Poe's most entertaining and creative works. In this 45-minute drama some of Poe's greatest poems, short stories, and satires, including   The Raven, Annabel Lee, The Bells, and The Tell Tale Heart  Haughey both performs and critiques Poe's work in the guise of a skeptical critic.

 

The program is free and open to the public.
Trivia for a Good (Library) Cause

Books for Kids Trivia Night, Wednesday, Oct. 16, 6:30 to 9:30 pm

, Quad City Botanical Center, 2525 4th Avenue, Rock Island. Event is an annual fundraiser for the Rock Island Library Foundation's Lorene Evans Watts fund for children's books, materials and supplies at the Rock Island Public Library.  $10 per per player; teams of eight. Works by Dee Schricker will be on display at the Main Library from Oct. 2-31.

 

Entitled "Unique Techniques," the show is open for viewing during regular library hours.  Works include paint, raku clay work, fabric and metal. Ms. Schricker is a partner in the Boho Chic Fine Arts gallery at Bucktown Center for the Arts,  225 E 2nd Street, Davenport.

 

"Creating, whether it is clay, painting, fabric art or even a new glaze recipe, is my daily passion.  To make something beautiful out of a lump of clay, a blank canvas, odd pieces of cloth or found objects, gives a satisfaction I cannot find anywhere else.  When someone purchases a piece of my art to display in their home, to me it is an honor like no other," Dee Schricker.

 

 
Frieze Lectures Explore Global Connections

Lectures on "It IS a Small World After All: Globalism's Impact on Literature, Art and Culture" will be offered in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street, at 2:00 pm on Tuesdays, October 22, 29, November 5 and 12.

Tuesday, October 22: Dr. Peter Kivisto, who holds Augustana's Richard A. Swanson Chair in Social Thought and was this year named Distinguished Professor at Finland's University of Turku, will speak on the role of ethnicity in the 21st century, setting the stage for a series that explores the gradual erosion of racial and societal dividing lines.

 

Tuesday, October 29: Dr. Margaret Morse, a member of Augustana's Department of Art History, will provide an overview of African Art from the College's collection, examining these works in their original contexts while discussing how Western perceptions of African masks and sculpture have influenced traditional and current artistic production on the continent.

 

The fall partnership has brought Augustana College professors into the Rock Island Main Library since 1998 for college-level lectures on literature, art, music and the sciences with no tests or grades. This year's series is dedicated to the memory of late library board member Ruth Evelyn Katz, who created the series as part of the Library's 125th anniversary. (The name refers to an architectural feature surrounding the top of the Main Library building.)

Brews & Blues Cruise Sunday September 22

The Mississippi Valley Blues Society is sponsoring a Brews and Blues Cruise on Sunday September 22, 2013.

We will start at Martini's On The Rock (4619 34th Street in Rock Island), where the party bus will leave at 1:00 p.m.  First we'll head to Bent River in Rock Island, then to Great River and Front Street in Davenport.  At each stop, two free samples and $1.00 off pints will be available.

Everyone will receive a commemorative glass. Door prizes will be drawn between each of the microbreweries including, but not limited to, fest tickets and MVBS merchandise.  We will return to Martini's On The Rock around 5:00 for blues music by the Candymakers, and $4.00 blues burgers.

All this for only $25.00!!  Tickets are available at the Blues Society office (Harrison and River Drive in Davenport, next to Union Station) Tuesday or Thursday 11:30-5:30.   (Call first:  563-32-BLUES.)  Or you can call the office to use a credit card.

Plan to attend the Night at the Shelter- SleepOut Benefiting the Humility of Mary Shelter, Inc.

The Humility of Mary Shelter's annual Night at the Shelter SleepOut will be held October 4-5, 2013 at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport.  The Night at the Shelter SleepOut is designed to bring awareness about homelessness in the Quad City community and raise funds to help provide beds and support for homeless persons served at the Humility of Mary Shelter, Inc.  

Gather your family and friends and join us for a fun-filled and enlightening experience to help fight homelessness in the QC area.  The event kicks off at 4:00 pm on Friday October 4th with an evening packed with fun for the whole family.  Activities throughout the evening will include : live music, a performance by Comedy Sportz, bags and kickball tournaments, food vendors, Jumpin Joeys bounce houses, an outdoor movie on the Modern Woodmen Park jumbo screen, and a homelessness learning opportunity: "Trading Places, A Homeless Experience".  Plus you can participate in the "Build Your Own Shelter" contest and stay the night in what you build.  

The event concludes on Saturday, October 5th.

Admission to this event is $10 per person, although we hope you will help us raise additional funds by asking everyone you know to sponsor your efforts to help the homeless. No amount is too small and a $10 donation will support a bed for one night. The top three fundraisers will receive a Faithful Quilt Award and their name on next year's event T-shirt. Your participation in this event will help ensure the continuation of shelter services to homeless men and women in the QC area well into the future. In Davenport, Iowa, Milestone Area Agency on Aging, the Center for Active Seniors, Inc. (CASI), Quad City Times and St. Ambrose University encourage seniors to attend the Fall Awareness Workshop on Tuesday, September 24, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at CASI 1035 W. Kimberly Road, Davenport, IA 52806.  This workshop will give seniors a passport to attend four different workshops that will provide them with helpful information and instruction on how to live a Fall Free lifestyle.

The workshops consist of: 1) Balance & Mobility Testing, 2) Pharmacy Screenings which include blood pressure checks, medication review and educational information, 3) Vision & Home Modifications informational session and 4) Exercise & Physical Activities station demonstrating yoga, Tai Chi, and Zumba Gold.

Iowa is part of the national Falls Free® Initiative, which includes more than 40 states and 70 national organizations, professional associations, and federal agencies across the country dedicated to reducing fall-related injuries and deaths among older adults.

This year's theme, Preventing Falls?One Step at a Time, seeks to unite professionals, older adults, caregivers, and family members to play a part in raising awareness and preventing falls in the older adult population.

Every 15 seconds, an older adult is seen in an Emergency Department for a fall-related injury. Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for those aged 65 and over. The chances of falling and of being seriously injured in a fall increase with age.  

"Falls are not a normal part of aging, and this day of awareness provides an opportunity to educate older adults and the community at large about how to reduce falls risks," said (Bonita) Lynn Beattie, vice president of Injury Prevention with the National Council on Aging(NCOA), leader of the Falls Free® Initiative. "We encourage seniors and their families to take proactive steps to prevent falls and stay independent for as long as possible."

Studies show that a combination of interventions can significantly reduce falls among older adults. Experts recommend:

? A physical activity regimen with balance, strength training, and flexibility components.

? Consulting with a health professional about getting a fall risk assessment.

? Having medications reviewed periodically.

? Getting eyes checked annually.

? Making sure the home environment is safe and supportive.

? New research also suggests hearing loss should be routinely assessed  

At senior centers and other community-based organizations across the United States, programs like A Matter of Balance, Tai Chi, and Stepping On help older adults gain the strength, improved balance, and confidence to help them live healthier lives and preserve their independence.

Rock Island Library Events for Adults Mix Learning, Culture, Illinois History

Rock Island, IL- Whatever your interest, there's probably an adult program for it this fall at the Rock Island Public Library. The list of free programs for late September and October ranges from genealogy education to the history of African-American miners in Illinois.

Library, Writing Center Celebrate the Freedom to Read Next Tuesday

Rock Island, IL - Rock Island Public Library and the Midwest Writing Center will partner to celebrate the freedom to read with a Banned Books Week Reception and Reading next Tuesday, Sept. 24 at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street.

The Rock Island Library event begins at 6:00 pm with a public reception. From 6:30 to 7:30 pm, readers will celebrate their First Amendment rights by offering public readings from their favorite banned or challenged works. The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Content of some readings may not be suitable for all ears.

Attendees may also show their support for intellectual freedom by entering to win Banned Books merchandise, such as cups, bookmarks, pins, bags, t-shirts, and more.

Banned Books Week is an annual event, held this year from Sept. 22 to 28. Since 1982, Banned Books Week has rallied librarians, booksellers, authors, publishers, teachers, and readers of all types to celebrate and defend the freedom to read. Each year, the ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom records hundreds of attempts by individuals and groups to have books removed from library shelves and from classrooms. The list of banned or challenged works includes classic novels of the 20th Century, such as The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, and To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee.

While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read. City of Blue Grass Iowa Park Board Press Release

The City of Blue Grass, Iowa Park Board is to hold it's third annual Pumpkin Dash. The registration is at the old Fire Station on Orphed Street near the water tower.

The event is on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Will have early registration.  The  cost for children  age 12 and under is $7.00 and includes a pumpkin and a meal lunch of a hot dog, chips and a drink.

September 6th-22nd - The 2nd Annual East West Riverfest A 17-day celebration of the arts, culture and heritage offerings that thrive in the Quad Cities and along the Mississippi River. Over 380 events will take place at various theaters, music venues, galleries, historic sites, parks, libraries, and attractions on both sides of the river in the Quad Cities. Enjoy visual, literary and performing arts.  Celebrate with world-class festivals and events. Visit exhibits, take a tour, ride on a riverboat, attend lectures, and participate in workshops. September 19th - LeClaire Information Center Celebrates One Year of Operation! Join us for our Open House & Volunteer Recognition! Since our Grand Opening on August 3rd 2012, the LeClaire Information Center has welcomed over 17,500 guests, including tourists, local residents, potential business owners and has provided information about local attractions, businesses, business opportunities, and other points of interest. Operated by the LeClaire Office of Tourism and located at 122. N. Cody Road, the Center is open Mon-Sat 10-4 and Sun noon-4. On Thursday, September 19th from 4-6pm, the public is invited to an Open House celebrating our "First Anniversary." The event will include light refreshments and the opportunity to discover what the LIC offers residents and tourists.  The festivities will conclude with a short program honoring our volunteers. We are always looking for additional volunteers! Plus, Pleasant Valley High School students (accompanied by a parent) can apply their volunteer hours to the school's "service learning" requirement for graduation.  Training (for students and adults) only takes about an hour and volunteers are able to schedule hours through online scheduling software. SERVING THE COMMUNITY AND BEYOND

Primitive Cottage is collecting food for the Princeton Presbyterian Church's Food Pantry which is in great need of food donations. They have helped alot of people, and now they need our help.  Donations can be dropped off at Primitive Cottage in LeClaire. Please check the expiration date on items because anything that has expired can't be given away.

First Presbyterian Church of LeClaire Meals for Seniors at the church every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 12 noon. Good food and a time to visit with others. Please call 563-289-3646 and make a reservation 2 days in advance.
