Hello!

Although July has been flying by, it simply means we're one week closer to this year's 42nd Annual Street Fest! Presented by Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, this year's Street Fest will be full of a variety of vendors, festival foods and drinks, firefighter water fights, great live music, and more! Participate in the Bix 7 run presented by the QC Times on Saturday morning and spend the rest of your day enjoying the Quad-Cities biggest homecoming party!
To all the country fans out there, you're in for a treat this weekend! The Heartland Jam Music Festival takes place this Friday and Saturday at Centennial Park. Here's your chance to see artists such as Phil Vassar, Kellie Pickler, Darius Rucker, Rodney Atkins, and more...all within a two-day period!
A significant portion of the festival's proceeds will go directly to the Loren Arp Memorial Foundation to assist children and families in the University of Iowa's burn treatment center.
One of the most distinct and powerful indie-rock/Americana groups takes the stage at River Music Experience tomorrow night. Come hear what all the buzz is about when The Pines perform their heart-piercing songs!. On Saturday, prepare to be swept away by energetic, tightly crafted music when RME hosts Holy Ghost Tent Revival. Until then, check out the creative union of The Grahams as they combine soulful bluegrass with Americana tonight at RME.
Looking for something new to see in the Quad Cities? Head to the River Center and be a part of one of the most exciting MMA Events this summer! Caged Aggression X debuts this Saturday and you won't want to miss out on this action! Or, head out to the Headbanger's Burlesque Part Deux at the Adler Theatre and get ready for an entertaining night!
What a better way to wind down the week than to live music in a coffee shop? Join Brewed Awakenings for their first of many summer events on Friday! Treat yourself to a refreshing smoothie or cup of joe while listening to live music by The Effie Afton band with special guest Janell Just. Keep an eye out for more events to come and be sure to stop in for breakfast or brunch!
Participate in a growing international movement that celebrates the art of giving by heading to the Figge for their Papergirl Project. Here's an opportunity to create some beautiful art for the public! Keep in mind PechaKucha Night is next Thursday at the Figge, too. Share ideas and interests with community members while enjoying complimentary appetizers, a cash bar, and PechaKucha presentations!
Take some time to explore Downtown Davenport this week. Stop at Bucktown Center for the Arts Wednesday through Saturday between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. to browse unique artwork and gifts! Or shop fair trade purses, jewelry, and more at SiS International! Make a day of it by grabbing lunch at Antonella's Pizzeria for delicious pizza or pasta and stopping by the Chocolate Manor for desert!

Greetings!

Come and see two great documentaries on the Midwestern prairie landscape this weekend! $5 gets you in to see both films! This is a can't miss event!
First up: America's Lost Landscape: The Tallgrass Prairie

America's Lost Landscape: The Tallgrass Prairie tells the rich and complex story of one of the most astonishing alterations of nature in human history. Prior to Euro-American settlement in the 1820s, one of the major landscape features of North America was 240 million acres of tallgrass prairie. But between 1830 and 1900 - in the space of a single lifetime - the tallgrass prairie was steadily transformed to farmland. This drastic change in the landscape also brought about an enormous social change for Native Americans; in an equally short time their cultural imprint was reduced in essence to a handful of place-names appearing on maps.
America's Lost Landscape examines the record of human struggle, triumph, and defeat that prairie history exemplifies, including the history and culture of America's aboriginal inhabitants. The story of how and why the prairie was changed by Euro-American settlement is thoughtfully nuanced. The film also highlights prairie preservation efforts and explores how the tallgrass prairie ecosystem may serve as a model for a sustainable agriculture of the future. The extraordinary cinematography of prairie remnants, original score and archival images are all delicately interwoven to create a powerful and moving viewing experience about the natural and cultural history of America. Written by David O'Shields
The film starts at 1:30pm

World Premiere: Jens Jensen: The Living Green

Excerpt from QCTImes article by Alma Gaul:

A documentary titled "Jens Jensen The Living Green" by Viva Lundin Productions, Chicago, will have its world premiere Saturday, July 20,  at the Figge Art Museum auditorium in Davenport.

The Jensen film was done for the Public Broadcasting Service, or PBS.

The documentary by Carey Lundin and Mark Frazel tells Jensen's life story and accomplishments, but its focus is his belief  that "people need daily access to the living green or they will shrivel up and die," Lundin said.

In Chicago, as in most crowded urban areas, regular people had little to no access to nature in Jensen's lifetime. This was a detriment to their spirit and, by extension, to their neighborhoods and society as a whole.

Jensen wanted to make parks accessible. He equated this with democracy, with being American, Lundin said.

"He thought America should not emulate Europe," she said. "He thought we should have our own identity, an American identity, an American aesthetic."

The film is full of beautiful images and tells a compelling story as there were times in Jensen's life when he was battling corruption in Chicago,  Lundin explained.

He also was internally conflicted between his belief that there should be free, beautiful spaces for the public and the fact that he made money by designing private landscapes for the very wealthy.

"I think people are really going to enjoy the story," Lundin said. "Once people find out how philosophical a city park can be, they will flip for him."

The film starts at approximately 3pm

Don't forget to stop into GAHC before the film to see the exhibit, Land & Water!

"BORN INTO BROTHELS"

This Oscar-winning 2004 documentary investigates a red-light district in
Calcutta, where filmmakers gave cameras to the children of sex workers in
the hope of capturing a perspective of the city not often seen. The
resulting photo portfolio became a European art show, the proceeds of
which funded educational opportunities for the photographers, presenting
dilemmas to the families of the recipients. Post-film discussion will

Still Time to Stow Away for Free Summer Performances in July at your Rock Island Library

Rock Island, IL: With acts ranging from hands-on science fun to musical comedy antics, the final two performers in the Rock Island Public Library's Have Book, Will Travel free summer reading program will be something children and families will want to write home about.

On Thursday, July 18, the Rock Island Public Library hosts its first visit from the Bluedorn Science Imaginarium of Waterloo, Iowa, with the Mad Mixtures live science demonstration. The library will host two free performances, with an 11:00 am show at the Main Library, 401 19th Street, and a 1:00 pm show at the Southwest Branch Library, 9010 Ridgewood Road.

The hands-on shows bring science alive for school age children of all ages, and include such experiments as finding out how to make a fire extinguisher, why different things burn at different temperatures, and how cold it is on Pluto using liquid nitrogen. Kids might even come face-to-face with a live snake. The Carl A. and Peggy J. Bluedorn Science Imaginarium is a three-floor, interactive science center in the heart of the Grout Museum District of Waterloo.

On Thursday, July 25, the Rock Island Library becomes a stage for the  high-energy musical antics of Babaloo Music and Fun, with free shows offered at 10:00 am in the Main Library and at 1:30 pm at the Southwest Branch Library. Best described as a one-man musical comedy act for children of all ages, Babaloo has been wowing children with a raucous, zany brand of entertainment for nearly 20 years.  The interactive shows get kids smiling, laughing and up their feet, featuring singing, stomping, dancing, bucket-beating and bubble-busting fun. And with award-winning songs like "My Toothbrush Fell in the Toilet" and "The Wee Wee Dance," what kid could resist?

All performances are free and open to the public. For details on other summer events for all ages, see www.rockislandlibrary.org, follow Facebook/rockislandlibrary, visit any Rock Island Library or call
309-732-7323 (READ).

2013 Summer reading contests and programs are funded by Friends of the Rock Island Public Library, the Milan-Blackhawk Area Public Library District (Southwest Branch location), and the Rock Island Public Library Foundation.
