If you haven't had a chance to explore the Questionable Architecture Exhibition at the Figge, now's your last chance! Come see movable structures made by hand from one of the Quad Cities very own before the exhibition closes Sunday. But where one exhibition closes, another opens. Check out Colony Interactive and work together to build a new colony at the Figge. What a way to build community!
Saturday is a day of firsts for some downtown businesses! Be a part of Gallery 114's first ever Salon Show this Saturday. Enjoy various art along with live music by Mover and Shakers and comedy by Andrew King. Also on Saturday, the Quad Cities Food Hub will host the first of many seminars to come. This weekend's class revolves around Fall Crops and Harvest- Seasonal Plant Support.  Show up a little early to peruse the Farmer's Market beforehand.
Finally, we owe a big THANK YOU  to all of those who made River Roots Live the best show we've ever done! We hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather, BBQ, and unforgettable music as much as we did.   We're already looking forward to RRL's 10th anniversary next year!
See you downtown!

Quad Cities - The HAVlife™ Foundation is collaborating with local schools, city officials, nonprofit organizations, clubs and churches to obtain more than 10,000 pledges of commitment to prevent lost potential by September 19, 2013. This effort starts, what is being recognized as a movement to celebrate our youth's potential for a future Quad Cities. Organizers believe with this movement, the community can secure the Quad Cities as the region that values and cares about youth the most in the nation.

Every day hundreds of organizations and individuals dedicate time, talents and treasure to the more than 78,000 youth in the community. The efforts behind Preventing Lost Potential Day are centered on making a commitment to youth and how, as a community, the Quad Cities will:  Educate, Protect, Encourage and Develop our future. "It's time that we come together as a community and be proud of the ways we invest in our youth and prevent lost potential," explains HAVlife™ Founder Mike Vondran.  "This is not about raising money for a cause, but rather encouraging the Quad Cities Community to adopt a stronger commitment to our youth."

On September 19, the community is invited to a free youth celebration held at Schwiebert Riverfront Park as a part of the Rock Island Parks and Recreation's Thursday Night Groove series. This event is open to the public and will include many youth centered activities. To learn more about this movement and to pledge commitment, visit HAVlife.org.

HAVlife™ Foundation was established in 2007 in honor of Hunter Aaron Vondran, his birthday is September 19. Hunter passed away at the young age of 13 due to injuries sustained in a tragic accident. The organization serves to prevent lost potential of youth through supporting schools and organizations with grants to encourage positive youth participation in the areas of music, arts and athletic programs. Iowa is part of the national Falls Free® Initiative, which includes more than 40 states and 70 national organizations, professional associations, and federal agencies across the country dedicated to reducing fall-related injuries and deaths among older adults.

This year's theme, Preventing Falls? One Step at a Time, seeks to unite professionals, older adults, caregivers, and family members to play a part in raising awareness and preventing falls in the older adult population.

Every 15 seconds, an older adult is seen in an Emergency Department for a fall-related injury. Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for those aged 65 and over. The chances of falling and of being seriously injured in a fall increase with age.

"Falls are not a normal part of aging, and this day of awareness provides an opportunity to educate older adults and the community at large about how to reduce falls risks," said (Bonita) Lynn Beattie, vice president of Injury Prevention with the National Council on Aging (NCOA), leader of the Falls Free® Initiative. "We ncourage seniors and their families to take proactive steps to prevent falls and stay independent for as long as possible."

Studies show that a combination of interventions can significantly reduce falls among older adults. Experts recommend:

  1. A physical activity regimen with balance, strength training, and flexibility components.
  2. Consulting with a health professional about getting a fall risk assessment.
  3. Having medications reviewed periodically.
  4. Getting eyes checked annually.
  5. Making sure the home environment is safe and supportive.
  6. New research also suggests hearing loss should be routinely assessed

At senior centers and other community-based organizations across the United States, programs like A Matter of Balance, Tai Chi, and Stepping On help older adults gain the strength, improved balance, and confidence to help them live healthier lives and preserve their independence.

For more information about Davenport Iowa's Fall Awareness Workshop, please call CASI 563-386-7477.

The art installation " Dying to Teach"  was created by Myra Robinson to bring attention to the current impasse in our educational system due to demands of unethical conduct made of teachers by administration in changing student grades.  These demands are made for purposes of Federal funding, which can be lost if  student grades are too low.

The installation addresses the consequent harassment should the teachers not comply. This is now a growing occurrence with some estimate placing the occurrences to 80%

Significant for our area, this art installation, to be unveiled on Friday 23rd. 2013 at the Phoenix, was brought to the Phoenix art gallery, Moline, because Mary Eve Thorson, the center of this art installation, who died due to this coercion by administration, was  born and brought up in Moline, and her body was brought to Moline a few weeks ago.

Mary's parents will be present for the evening so will the teacher, Myra Robinson, who created the installation.   There will a general talk about installation and its focus: Mary's message, around 7:30 p.m. It will be a informal evening to discuss and review the art and it's message.

We have included the installation as part of the  extended show " Music Along the Mississippi River" . The current show is a visual art representation about the feelings and inspiration of music evoked  by our beloved Mississippi River.

The show will be open during the evening.

7:00 p.m.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY AND BEYOND

Ascentra donates $25,000 to Iowa Quad Cities Rotary to help establish a scholarship in late CEO Paul Lensmeyer's name. He was a long time member of the service organization and was very involved in a number of Rotary service projects, including those focused on disadvantaged youth and disadvantaged families. Rotary's primary fundraiser is Ribs for Kids and takes place on August 16th. Proceeds from that help children of military families whose parents are serving people overseas attend a kid's camp. The group hopes this will be an ongoing scholarship as part of the mission to help the advancement of people in need and youth and for people committed to academic achievement.

Hello!
The Wallflowers Come one, come all, and come hungry to LeClaire Park this weekend for River Roots Live!  The Wallflowers, Shooter Jennings, Vintage Trouble, and Bodeans headline our awesome 17 band lineup! The award-winning Ribfest BBQ vendors open for lunch Friday starting at 11:00 a.m., and remember, admission is FREE before 5 p.m. and only $5 after 5:00 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.   For more background on the headliners, check out the QC-Times Go & Do section.  Visit the RRL Facebook page and RSVP to the FB event page while you're at it!
The music doesn't stop at LeClaire Park! Head to River Music Experience for RRL's Late night Show both Friday and Saturday after the fest.   Get down with Joy Avenue Media Society and Patio! Show your River Roots Live stamp for a discount! Shift to jazz mode on Sunday when West Music presents for Polyrhythms Third Sunday Jazz featuring BK Davis, Steinway Artist. Support RME at this unique Third Sunday Jazz by purchasing keys from the Steinway Family Boston grand piano.
Looking for a chance to try some new yoga poses or dance moves? You're in luck! Join the Women's Connection next Thursday at the RiverCenter for cocktails and healthy conversations featuring food and fitness panelists! Learn 3 Simple Ways to De-Stress Your Life through stress-reducing activities and samples of healthy foods. Don't forget to wear your comfortable clothes.
The Figge Art Museum will start the school year off right tonight by hosting Teacher Appreciation Night for this week's Thursdays at the Figge. Stick around for Dinner and a Movie afterwards and enjoy an art film from Art21! On Saturday, test your watercolor skills during the Watercolor Workshop. Learn basic brush stroke techniques, treatments to color mixing, and more during this educational workshop.
If you haven't heard by now, the Quad Cities' own Modern Woodmen Park is now USA Today's #1 Minor League Ballpark in the country! Thanks to all those who voted to make this a huge victory for the QC! Help celebrate the win by supporting the River Bandits this week when they take on the Burlington Bees and Cedar Rapids Kernels.
Take advantage of the season and hit up the Freight House Farmers Market this weekend, too.  There are plenty of fresh and local goods for everyone!
See you downtown!
