Kelly's adds Friday events, second tent, VIP package; expects more than 15,000 to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, Saturday, March 17, 2012.

DAVENPORT, IOWA – Kelly's Irish Pub and Eatery, located at 2222 E. 53rd, Avenue, Davenport, IA, since 2004, will host its eighth annual St. Patrick's Day Festival, Friday March 16, and Saturday, March 17.

The weekend's festivities will kick off with a concert Friday night, featuring CMT's The Singing Bee star Beau Davidson. Then Saturday, the doors open at six o'clock in the morning, where over one ton of corned beef and two hundred kegs of beer will be served alongside all-day entertainment. Kelly's has established what it believes to be the largest St. Patrick's Day celebration in Iowa.

Friday's St. Pat's Weekend Kickoff concert, with tickets being sold in advance at Kelly's for $8, or the day of the show for $10, will also include Irish Dancers and three local opening acts before Nashville recording artist and CMT star Beau Davidson takes the stage.

Saturday, the main celebration gets started at 6:00am, and to fit the annual Skydiving Leprechauns, the Mullane Healy Godley Irish Dancers, a magician, a juggler, and live music (complete lineup below], Kelly's has added a second tent, for a total of 11,000 square feet of heated tent space. The added space will allow Kelly's St. Patrick's Day Festival to include games, and TVs for NCAA Basketball Tournament viewing, as well as a VIP Package that includes a raised area, limited to 100 VIPs, with VIP snacks, a gift bag, and special services. 2012 will also find the return of Mississippi River Distilling Company's River Baron Vodka - made in LeClaire, Iowa. This locally produced small-batch vodka will be featured in a Kelly's Irish Pub & Eatery Signature Drink called the "Flying Leprechaun."


Owner Dan Kelly says, "Partnering with local businesses and organizations is important to our goal of making this a community event. We expect this celebration to continue to grow and be a fun, safe, friendly event, and those partnerships serve to enhance that goal. Partners include this year's stage sponsors, Wieblers' Harley Davdison, as well as the River Cities' Reader, Knilan's Furniture and Radon Solutions. In that same spirit of community, and to continue an eight year tradition of safe, fun St. Patrick's Day celebrations, Kelly's will be offering a shuttle service to make sure people get home safely. Details can be found posted at either end of the tent on Saturday.

Great food has always been great tradition at Kelly's and in less than twenty four hours, the Kelly's team will serve up over two thousand pounds of slow-cooked corned beef, either as a sandwich or as a traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner, complete with roasted red potatoes.
The event has consistently been growing since 2005 and Kelly's owner Dan Kelly says he is expecting more than 15,000 attendees. "There is no fee for admission Saturday, with plenty of nearby parking." Says Kelly, "We are seeing folks coming in from Des Moines, Dubuque and Iowa City. It's become a regional draw to the Quad Cities."

Roger Farinha was born in British Guyana in 1971 and immigrated with his family to the US at the age of 9 years. He became a naturalized citizen in New York at the age of 16, and went on to earn a Bachelors in the History of Modern philosophy, and a masters of Liberal Studies through Fordham University. Most recently, Farinha spent six years as a big-rig trucker, talking to his fellow Americans as a part of his book writing project, the manuscript of which is entitled The New Walden; and the conclusion of which heralded an economic justice message which flowered into his most recent organizing activities in the Quad Cities in the Occupy Wall Street spirit.

Hoover Summer Day Camp in West Branch, Iowa Offers Kids a Chance to Investigate Nature and History

WEST BRANCH, IOWA? Does your family consider themselves great detectives? 

This summer is your chance to prove it! The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association invites children ages 9 to 12 along with their parents, grandparents, or guardians, to investigate as they explore the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum and Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch, Iowa. As detectives for the day, children and their families will search for clues and uncover mysteries at the Presidential Library and Museum and in the tallgrass prairie at the National Historic Site.

Registration is required for the Hoover Summer Day Camp. Families may select July 11, July 18, July 25, or August 1, 2012 as one of the dates to attend. Activities last from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Registration costs $20 per group (for up to 3 participants) and $10 for each additional participant. Registration fees must be paid in advance. EVENT FOCUSES ON LACK OF GENDER DIVERSITY IN IOWA LAW AND POLITICS

March 1 event features experts and ground-breaking women in the legal and political fields who will open up a dialogue about the lack of gender diversity in all levels of Iowa's government and examine the implications of the problem.

IOWA CITY - When it comes to gender diversity in the halls of power, Iowa has mixed traditions. Although slow to grant women full rights to vote, Iowa was the first state to admit women to the bar. The Iowa Supreme Court has furthered progressive goals, as in Varnum v. Brien, yet only two women have ever presided on the Court. Iowa and Mississippi are the only two states in the country never to have elected a woman as governor or to national Congress.

On March 1, 2012, female judges, lawyers, politicians, and experts will speak at the Boyd Law Building's Levitt Auditorium, 130 Byington Road, Iowa City, I.A., at The University of Iowa. The event runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a reception to follow at Hotel Vetro, Plaza Towers #1106, 201 South Linn Street, Iowa City, I.A.

"The Journal of Gender, Race & Justice has historically hosted annual symposia that focus on national legal issues related to our mission. This year, we thought that it was important to host a conference that would focus on an issue specific to Iowa--the lack of gender diversity throughout all levels of Iowa's government," said Rachael Jensen, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal and third-year law student. "The possibility for dialogue on this issue is far-reaching, and we expect a wide audience that will include the legal community, student groups, and citizens. This discussion is important because as it stands now, when branches of the government are making important decisions, critical voices and perspectives are missing. In addition to critiquing the status quo, we also hope to provide a positive message by highlighting the achievements of women who have succeeded and giving them a forum to share their experiences."

RE: The 26th Annual Quad City Youth Conference

The 26th Annual Quad City Youth Conference welcomes Shellie Moore-Guy as its keynote speaker. Ms. Moore­Guy is the current Poet Laureate of the Quad Cities. Ms. Moore­Guy is a lifelong resident of Rock Island, a dedicated community advocate, motivational speaker, and story teller. She is the director of Healing Waters Empowerment Project, a grassroots organization that addresses family and community violence.

Ms. Moore-Guy will headline the keynote presentation on both Thursday and Friday, February 23-24, 2012, at 9:00 a.m. in the Mississippi River Hall at The River Center, located at 136 E. 3rd Street in Davenport. Hundreds of students from 28 Illinois and Iowa high schools and junior high schools are expected to attend this 2012 edition of the Quad Cities Youth Conference  high school students on Thursday and junior high students on Friday.

Following the keynote presentation, the Quad City Youth Conference also offers students a choice of three Workshop Sessions. Nearly 20 different community agencies have come together to offer workshops to enhance decision-making skills necessary for living in a socially complex world. In addition, during the lunch hour students will have an opportunity to attend a career/college fair on senior high day and a community fair on junior high day.

The Quad City Youth Conference is an annual event for area young people to come together and experience workshops and speakers specitically for youth! The Quad City Youth Conference is the only event of its kind in the Quad Cities and one of the few nationally. For 26 years, local schools and human service agencies have joined hands to plan and present the annual Quad Cities Youth Conference, an event that is focused on positively impacting area youth.

New Name, New Races For 'Nature Valley Pro Chase'

Minneapolis - The only race series in the United States offering amateur cyclists trips to the Nature Valley Grand Prix, where they will compete against the country's top men and women professionals, has a new name and several new cities for 2012.

Formerly known as the Nature Valley Pro Ride, the new "Nature Valley Pro Chase" will select the top amateur man and woman at six races to become part of a pair of composite Nature Valley Cycling Teams for the 14th annual edition of the premier stage race on the 2012 USA Cycling National Racing Calendar.

"This name better reflects the goal of the program, which is to emotionally engage the entire cycling community by telling the stories of the participants," Nature Valley Grand Prix Executive Director David LaPorte said. "What hasn't changed is the opportunity it gives top amateurs to be noticed by pro team managers and potentially receive a pro contract."

Rider invitations will be issued following each of the six stops on the Nature Valley Pro Chase national tour: Tour de Murrieta (March 9-11) near San Diego; Jefferson Cup (April 1) near Charlottesville, Va.; Tour de Moore (April 28) near Raleigh, N.C.; Superior Morgul Classic (May 18-20) near Boulder, Colo.; Memorial Day Weekend Omnium (May 26-28) in the Quad Cities of Iowa and Illinois; San Jose Omnium (May 30-31) near San Jose, Calif.

The Tour de Murrieta, the Tour de Moore and the Superior Morgul Classic are new to the calendar while the Memorial Day Weekend Omnium and Jefferson Cup return from last year. The San Jose Omnium was a stop on the series in 2010.

Tour de Murrieta promoter Ernie Sanchez said he looks to add a new element to his race each year and the Nature Valley Pro Chase is a perfect fit.

"This is huge for us it's going to add that extra element of excitement to our race," Sanchez said. "We've had some great competitors over the years, from Chris Horner to Sarah Hammer and Chad Beyer and we always have a very strong, competitive men's category 1 field. I know they'll be looking forward to what some refer to as the "American Idol" of cycling. So we're proud to be a part of it."

Nature Valley Pro Chase qualifiers will earn free entries to the Nature Valley Grand Prix, generous travel stipends, team clothing, housing, ground transportation, and staff support for their composite teams. They will also receive pro-level recognition before, during and after the events, including pre-race call-ups and participation in promotional and media appearances. Tour de Murrieta (March 9-11), San Diego: Three unique courses comprise a weekend of racing - Friday's time trial features a 1.2-mile portion of unpaved/dirt road. Saturday's criterium is run on a lightning-fast, one-mile course in historic Downtown Murrieta, while Sunday's circuit race is run on a 3.5-mile course (56 miles for men, 46 miles for women).

Jefferson Cup (April 1), Charlottesville, Va.: Nearly two dozen editions make this is the oldest continually run road race in the Mid-Atlantic region. The course for the one-day race winds through rolling countryside south of Charlottesville. The race is 70 miles for men and 50 miles for women.

Tour de Moore (April 28), Southern Pines, N.C.: The oldest road race in the South (this is the 37th edition) has previously been used as both a Pan American games qualifier and a qualifier for the Quebec Provincial Team. Men will tackle four laps of a 27-mile rolling loop of the Fort Bragg Military Reservation (112 miles) while women do two laps for a 58-mile race.

Superior Morgul Classic (May 18-20), Boulder, Colo.: The Morgul Classic has three days of racing and roots in the famed Red Zinger and Coors Classic races. Friday's time trial starts on top of "The Hump" and is a 6.5-mile course up "The Wall." Satruday is a criterium through the town of Superior, followed by Sunday's road race on the fabled Morgul Bismark course.

Memorial Day Weekend Omnium (May 26-28), Iowa and Illinois: Returning for the second straight year, the three days of racing consist of a trio of unique criteriums: Snake Alley, Melon City and the Quad Cities Criterium - which, at 47 years old, is the fourth oldest criterium in the nation and the oldest in Illinois. All three have been a fixture on the Midwest racing circuit on Memorial Day weekend for more than a quarter century.

San Jose Omnium (May 27-28), San Jose, Calif.: One of the longest running bike races in San Jose, Calif., the road race (63.5 miles for men, 63.5 miles for women) climbs 4,500 feet in 20 miles over Mt. Hamilton, the highest peak in the Bay area, on a course that was part of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California. The criterium is run over a one-mile course in Morgan Hill, Calif.

WQPT ANNOUNCES WRITERS CONTEST

MOLINE, ILLINOIS - WQPT, Quad Cities PBS calls on all children in kindergarten through 3rd grade to enter the PBS Kids Go Writing Contest. Every entrant will receive a Certificate of Achievement.  Stories must be the original work of the child. They may write fact or fiction, prose or poetry. All entries must be postmarked by Friday, April 10, 2012 and mailed or dropped off at WQPT at the Western Illinois University 60th Street Campus as 3561 60th Street Moline, Illinois 61265 Sixteen winners (four selected from each grade) will receive local recognition on WQPT and win special prizes.  Winning stories will be displayed at the Butterworth Center in Moline, Illinois, the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, the Family Museum in Bettendorf, Iowa, the Midwest Writing Center in Davenport, Iowa and on the WQPT website. Winners will be notified in late April and a reception will be held to honor the winning stories at the Butterworth Center in Moline.

Sponsors of the writing contest are also hosting workshops to help Kindergarten through 3rd grade students with their writing and illustrating skills. EVERYONE'S A WINNER AT BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

Event includes local champion showcase

Davenport, IA - February 17, 2012 - Former St. Louis Cardinal Rick Horton will be the speaker at Breakfast of Champions, an event that celebrates perseverance and teamwork.  Horton, a former MLB pitcher who now broadcasts for the team, will entertain and inspire while recounting the remarkable determination and drive that led to the Cardinals' 2011 World Series win.  The family oriented event will take place on Saturday, February 25, from 9:00am - 11:30am on the suite level of Modern Woodmen Park.  The program will also showcase local high school champions and offer a full brunch buffet, silent auction and activities for children.  Tickets are $40 for adults/ $10 for children under 12 and can be purchased at the Adler Theatre box office at 136 East Third Street, Davenport or online at www.goldroomlegacy.org.  Same day sales will be $45/adults and $10 per child at the door.  The event is sponsored by the Riverboat Development Authority with additional funding from the Quad Cities River Bandits and the City of Davenport.  A portion of the proceeds will be shared by Project Renewal, the Boys and Girls Club and Gold Room Legacy Project.
Jim Albracht will be Master of Ceremonies for the event.  "The drive of the 2011 Cardinals was amazing" said Albrecht.  "No team has ever won a World Series after finding itself 10½ games out of a playoff spot on the 25th of August.  No team had ever won a World Series after being one strike away from elimination in back-to-back innings of the same World Series game.  But this team overcame those obstacles and more.  And that is what this program is about - believing in yourself and reaching for your dreams.  It's going to be a lot of fun."
The event takes place at Modern Woodmen Park, home of the Quad Cities River Bandits, Midwest Minor League Champions.  Also being honored are area high school teams that have honored the Quad Cities with their teamwork, sportsmanship and excellence: the Assumption Girls Basketball team, winners of the 3A championship; the Moline Girls softball team that holds the 4A title; Davenport North's Boys Bowling team who are the 2A champions, and the Rock Island Boys Basketball 3A State champions.
The Breakfast of Champions silent auction will include an assortment of spectacular baseball packages including season tickets to the Quad City River Bandits; use of a skybox suite with tickets for 16 for a Bandits game; a Cardinal package with hotel, dinner and game tickets for two; the chance to being Bandit of the Day; two tickets to Damn Yankees at the Adler Theatre with dinner and a nights stay at the Hotel Blackhawk, as well as Cardinals and River Bandits merchandise.  Rascal the River Bandit will be on hand to join in the fun and have pictures taken with his friends.  There will be an inflatable and a putt-putt hole set up, and coloring, activities, and some board games for the kids.
About Rick Horton
Rick Horton is a broadcaster on Cardinals telecasts, providing play-by-play commentary as well as postgame analysis. A former left-handed pitcher for the Cardinals, Rick spent seven years in the Major Leagues, playing for St. Louis, Los Angeles and the Chicago White Sox. He made his Major League debut with the Cardinals in 1984 and participated in the 1985 and 1987 World Series with the Redbirds and won the Series in 1988 while with the Dodgers.  After retiring from his Major League playing career, Horton remained in the St. Louis area where he has been active in the Greater St. Louis Area Fellowship of Christian Athletes, serving as the Director of the St. Louis FCA since 1993.
