Davenport, IA - For 28 years, Volunteers for Symphony has been hosting the area's largest sale of gently used items to support the education programs of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra. This year's sale will be held at 902 West Kimberly Road in Davenport, between Godfather's Pizza and Shoe Carnival in the Village Shopping Center.

The event will kick off on Thursday, June 16, with a Preview Party from 6 PM to 9 PM. Admission to the party is $10 at the door and gives you the first opportunity to buy and choose from an enormous selection of housewares, clothing, sporting goods, furniture, books, records, antiques, and jewelry, to name just a few. People traditionally begin lining up in the afternoon, so be sure to arrive early to get your spot! Refreshments and live music will be provided while you shop.

Also available at the Preview Party will be a 1984 Buick Electra Park Avenue with a V8 engine and only 23,000 miles. Other amenities include power seats, power windows, air conditioning, AM/FM cassette radio. The car shows no rust and will be sold "as is" to the best offer at 8 PM on Thursday night.

The sale then continues on Friday, June 11, 7 AM to 6 PM, and Saturday, June 12, 7 AM to 4 PM. Both days are FREE ADMISSION. Saturday is half price day and features a $5 bag sale beginning at noon. To buy Preview Party tickets, call 563.322.QCSO (7276) or visit www.qcsymphony.com.

###
Rock Island, IL - Falling Up, a short film produced in the Quad Cities, will be screening on Sunday, June 26th, at 7pm at The Establishment Theatre, 220 19th Street in Rock Island.  Written and directed by Quad City natives Ryan Marzolph, John Hoffman and Louis Young, this locally-made independent movie features many Quad City landmarks as its setting.  Doors open at 6:30 and admission is just $5.

The evening will feature the hometown premiere of Falling Up, a science-fiction drama about a young man struggling with a technology which can record a person's every thought and feeling, and its implications on identity, memory, and humanity.  It will also include a special bonus presentation of the award-winning short film, The Responsibilities of Men, also made in the Quad Cities.  Both films will include an introduction by the filmmakers, and be followed by a discussion and Q&A with the audience.  There will also be original artworks on display and for sale by local artist Louis Young, which were used as props in the film.

Hello!
Chair AffairPull up a chair for the Figge's gala event, "A Chair Affair," which is celebrating the opening of a new exhibit, The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Chair Design. This unique fundraiser will feature live music, heavy hors d'oeuvres, and more!  Participate in an interesting Art Talk duringThursdays at the Figge tonight, and don't miss the Downtown Davenport Architecture Tour on Wednesday.

Miss IowaThe Miss Iowa & Miss Teen Scholarship Pageant will keep the Adler Theatre busy throughout the weekend, and the River Bandits begin another homestretch tonight at Modern Woodmen Park.  Seats for next week's performance by John Prine and Iris DeMent at the Adler won't last forever, so buy your tickets now!

BowlsGet a sneak peek of downtown's newest restaurant!  Bowls: Urban Eats is now open at the corner of 3rd & Brady, and their delicious noodle, rice and salad combinations will make your mouth water.  Bowls will release an expanded menu with new hours upon its grand opening later this summer, but stop in now and be among the first to try it out!

QC RollersFlat track roller derby action will be in full force Saturday when the QC Rollers arrive at the RiverCenter for another bout, and we recommended participating in a drop-in hockey or soccer game at River's Edge if you'd like to get involved in your own athletic competition. Read the turf and ice schedules and discover dozens of the events at River's Edge!

Lipbone
Inventive singer/songwriter Lipbone Redding is hosting a FREEworkshop and show at River Music Experience.  Redding is known for his ability to use his vocals to sound exactly like a trombone; the phenomenon must be seen live to be truly appreciated! RME is providing multiple FREE concerts this week including Friday Live at 5 featuring OrangadangJason ParchertThe Madison Letter, andSurface Tension.  Stop in for a Live Lunch session or Songwriters in the Round this week, as well.

Manny LopezThe Manny Lopez Big Band will headline Music on the Levee on the LeClaire Park band shell on Sunday, but if you'd rather discuss a good science fiction book than dance on the riverfront, check out DAGOBAH at the library.  Don't forget to shop for fresh and local goods at the Freight House Farmers MarketTuesday and Saturday, too!

QC-Times Photo QuiltA new exhibit regarding German Influences in the Civil War at the German American Heritage Center will be highlighted by a Quilts of the Civil Warpresentation on Sunday.  Read this great Quad-City Times article for more details.

Local Bettendorf residents get sneak peek into the life of an American farmer with new
America's Farmers Mobile Experience

What:    Ever wonder what it's like to be a farmer today?  Curious about the men and women who care for the fields that you drive by?  Now people in Bettendorf have the opportunity to take a look into the life of an American farmer and learn more about the vital role they play in the world of agriculture today through the America's Farmers Mobile Experience.  Kevin Green, local farmer, played a large role in bringing the traveling display to the Isle Casino Hotel in Bettendorf and will serve as the host of the Mobile Experience while it is here.

The new Mobile Experience is a traveling 53-foot trailer that expands into 1,000-square feet of exhibit space that immerses visitors in the lives of America's farm families.  The tour is designed to educate consumers on modern agriculture and the challenges farmers face to meet the growing demands of the rapidly increasing world population.

Visitors will take a journey through three different focus areas with interactive tools and displays to better understand the life of an American farmer.
•    An interactive globe will allow visitors to see population growth and how many people one acre of farmland will need to feed to meet the demand of the growing population.
•    A 180-degree theater immerses visitors in a video experience that spotlights an American farm family and what they are currently doing to meet the world demand.  Hear three generations of farm women speak about what farm life means to them.
•    Ag educators serve as personal guides teaching guests about the tools and technologies, including breeding, biotechnology and agronomics, that help farmers meet current challenges.

When:        June 7th & 8th
Tours will run from 8am to 6pm daily. (Closed for break 1:30 to 2:30pm each day)

These words are also very revealing, reflecting the underlying prejudices and bias that weave in all societies and cultures.

The flip-flops are on.  The lemonade is made.  It's time to kick back, relax, and enjoy summer!  There's nothing children look forward to more than summer vacation - but it's also an important time to give thought to the upcoming school year.  In a time of cash-strapped school districts cutting programs and consolidating classes, Rivermont Collegiate continues to provide students with a comprehensive education.  Rivermont, located in Bettendorf, is the Quad Cities' only private, independent, nonsectarian college-prep school for students in preschool through twelfth grade.

At Rivermont, small class sizes, individualized attention, and high academic standards result in students who nourish personal talents and passions while gaining a critical foundation to life and learning.  Rivermont infuses a traditional curriculum with innovative ideas and technology, as well as the freedom to take risks in academics, leadership, athletics, arts, and service.  Foreign language instruction begins in kindergarten and individualized college counseling begins in the ninth grade.  100% of Rivermont graduates are accepted to four-year colleges and universities and over 90% earn four-year renewable college merit scholarships.

What are you waiting for?  Come explore Rivermont Collegiate at our Summer Open House on Thursday, June 9th from 9:00-11:00 a.m. This casual event gives families the opportunity to tour campus and explore our philosophy and programs.  Rivermont Collegiate is located at 1821 Sunset Drive in Bettendorf, directly off 18th street behind K&K Hardware.  No appointment necessary!  Join us!

For additional information on Rivermont Collegiate or Thursday's Summer Open House, contact Cindy Murray at (563) 359-1366 ext. 302 ormurray@rvmt.org.
