Independent Scholars' Evenings:
"Social Networking Etiquette"
Is Social Networking Rudeness on the Rise?

By

Mark McLaughlin
Author
Public Relations Director at Results Marketing.

Mark McLaughlin will explore the transgressions of online etiquette in his
presentation. He will provide tips on how to avoid annoying or rude behavior. He
will also provide suggestions on how to nurture positive Internet relationships.
McLaughlin believes that annoying or inconsiderate social networking behavior
is, in part, a product of the fast times in which we live.
"Our culture is passing through a time of brisk technological development," he
says. "Modern life is changing at a frantic pace - and that's okay. But as the
world changes, sometimes people concentrate too much on their own objectives and
manners fly out the window - and that's not okay."
Because Facebook and other social networks are free, people sometimes feel that
"anything goes" -- but in reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
"Abusing a free service is almost doubly inconsiderate," he said. "People should
be grateful for the service and treat its other users with respect.

Think about this social networking scenario: Suppose you are an author and some
of your Facebook friends are also authors. But since they write books in the
same genre as your works, they are also competitors. When those authors post ads
for their books on your Facebook page without asking you, are they being rude?

About the presenter :

Throughout his career, Mark McLaughlin has specialized in getting messages out
to business, industry and the general public. Over the years, his writings have
appeared in literally thousands of magazines, trade journals, business
publications, newspapers, anthologies, and websites.

When he is not at his desk at Results Marketing, writing advertising copy and
news releases, he is at home working on his latest book. His 20-plus books
include the supernatural suspense novel MONSTER BEHIND THE WHEEL (co-written
with Michael McCarty), the story collections MOTIVATIONAL SHRIEKER and PICKMAN'S
MOTEL, and the poetry collections THE GOSSAMER EYE (co-written with Rain Graves
and David Niall Wilson), PHANTASMAPEDIA, and PROFESSOR LaGUNGO'S EXOTIC
ARTIFACTS & ASSORTED MYSTIC COLLECTIBLES.

Home Food Preservation 101 will be offered on June 21, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Freight House, 421 W. River Drive in Davenport.

The workshop, taught by ISU Extension and Outreach specialist, Vera Stokes, is intended for those wanting to learn how to safely preserve food. It will also serve as a refresher for those who have experience preserving food.

Since 2006, there have been new canning recommendations that everyone should be aware of when canning at home. Participants will receive current Iowa State University Extension food preservation publications and learn about a new program, Preserve the Taste of Summer.

The workshop is $10.00 and participants need to register by June 15 by calling the Extension Office at 563-359-7577 so there are enough materials available.

"People are 'rediscovering' the joy and economies and fresh taste of home gardening and want to preserve that bounty to enjoy throughout the year by freezing, drying or canning those foods," says Stokes. The program will touch on canning, both hot water bath and pressure canning, freezing, equipment needed and a review of resources available.

Food preservation information and answers to your questions are available by calling the Iowa State University toll free Answer Line 1-800-262-3804 or 1-800-735-2942 (Relay Iowa phone linkage for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals). The Answer Line is staffed Monday through Friday from 9 am - 12noon, 1 pm to 4 pm.

Pressure canners gauge testing will be on June 7, 2012 from 9:30 - 11:30 am at the Scott County Extension and Outreach office. Pressure canners with a dial-type pressure gauge should be tested each year for accuracy. To have a dial-gauge tested, bring the canner lid only - the entire canner is not needed.

It is not necessary to test weighted or rocker-type pressure regulators because they cannot be adjusted and will usually remain accurate. If you are unavailable at the scheduled time but would like a canner lid tested, you may bring the canner lid into the office ahead of June 7 and pick it up the next day.

Hello!
Downtown was packed for Mother's Day weekend and it was great to see so many people enjoying the Beaux Arts Fair and all of our shops and restaurants!  We also celebrated a ribbon cutting for the soon-to-be open Front Street Brewery expansion and Tap Room at the Freight House.  Read this QC-Times article to learn more about what's next for our riverfront landmark, and remember to visit the outdoor Freight House Farmers Market!

BalletIf you love a good fairy tale, don't miss Ballet Quad Cities presentation of The Sleeping Beauty at the Adler Theatre on Saturday.  Next door at the RiverCenter, Metro Mini Makers of the Quad Cities will be holding their 28th Annual Sale & Exhibit of Dollhouse Miniatures. Don't forget to pick up tickets while they last to see Wilco at the Adler in July,  too!

Guitar wizard and two-time Grammy-winner Laurence Juber will be playing live and hosting a workshop at River Music Experience!  QC Symphony fans will enjoy  Rhythm Unleashed: The Music of Marc Mellits, but don't miss sweet acoustic tunes by  Daphne Willis tonight!  We'd also like to thank Ashford University for helping to sponsor the Laurence Juber show.

Ashley Raines, Greg and Susan DirksOld Tire Swingers, and Key N Krates will also perform at RME this week.   Moonlight Bride, Ellis Kell, Lewis Knudsen, and Strategic will each play during RME's Live Lunch series.  Play your own music and get involved with Mandolin JunctionKidz Days, a Drum Clinic with Mike Mangini, and Account Music Club.

RDA announces $20,000 grant at festival

Yesterday, May 15, 2012, the lineup was announced for the 41st annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival, including artists from Florida, Texas and Michigan. Some of the performers include Wally's Warehouse Waifs, Andy Schumm, Bill Allred's Classic Jazz Band, and the Dave Bennett Quartet. For a complete listing, visit http://www.bixsociety.org/bands.html.

In addition to announcing the Jazz Festival performers and events, the Memorial Society introduced a new scholarship opportunity for area schools. Individual scholarships will still be available to high school seniors, but the Society will begin awarding a $500 scholarship to the music department of a local school too. "Being a member of the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Youth Band gave me the chance to become involved with the Jazz Society and learn about traditional jazz and its importance," said Christina Hesse, a 2011 scholarship winner who is currently attending Western Illinois University.

During the announcement, a representative from the Riverboat Development Authority was present to share that a $20,000 grant had been awarded to the festival.

Some of the special events at this year's Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival include a big band dance on Friday, the gravesite performance on Saturday, a jazz brunch on Sunday morning, and the closing Afterglow event on Sunday evening.  Part of this year's performances will include Friday and Saturday night outdoor concerts in LeClaire Park.

"The rich history and tradition found here in Davenport are true treasures," said Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba. "The Jazz Festival attracts jazz aficionados from around the world, and this year's lineup will surely live up to expectations."

The 41st annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival will be held August 2-5, 2012, at the Adler Theater, the Mississippi Room of the RiverCenter, and at LeClaire Park in Davenport. By partnering with the City of Davenport, the performances at LeClaire Park on Friday and Saturday evening will be free, as they are considered part of the Summer Concert Series. Individual concert tickets, day passes and festival passes are available online at www.bixsociety.org

The Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Society was founded in 1972 to carry on the memory and music of Leon "Bix" Beiderbecke. The Society hosts annual events such as the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival, in conjunction with jazz education programs to raise awareness about traditional jazz music.
