HB 2897 will help provide comfort for veterans transitioning back to civilian life

MARION (Aug. 25, 2017) – Governor Bruce Rauner today signed HB 2897, legislation to increase access to service dogs for veterans through the Helping Paws Program. This expansion will add veterans to the program-eligibility pool and allow the training of service dogs to assist veterans with physical or mental health ailments.

Davenport, IA – On Aug 31st, approx. 100 Veterans, including 2 WWII veterans, will travel to Washington, D.C to visit the monuments dedicated to their service and sacrifice. This is the 9 th Honor Flight of the Quad Cities that area Hy-Vee stores have sponsored.

On Wednesday, Aug 30th, Hy-Vee is hosting a pre-flight dinner for these veterans, a guest and their guardians.

The Office of Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA OIG) today released the results of its review of the circumstances of veteran Brandon Ketchum’s suicide and whether Ketchum received adequate mental health treatment at the Iowa City VA Health Care System. Sen. Chuck Grassley, Sen. Joni Ernst, Sen. Ron Johnson, and Rep. Dave Loebsack sought the review. They made the following comment.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, as a long-time advocate for whistleblowers, wrote to the Department of Veterans Affairs twice about VA retaliation against Brandon Coleman for pointing out poor treatment of suicidal veterans where he worked in Arizona.

MOLINE, IL – WQPT, Quad Cities PBS invites veterans who served in the United States military, in any capacity, from World War I through the present, to share their story of service as a part of the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project. 

The interviews will be held Saturday, July 29 from noon to 3:00 pm during The Wall That Heals exhibit on the campus of Western Illinois University – Quad Cities, 3300 River Drive, Moline, Illinois.
