Winner of the QC Libraries’ 2017 Teen Tournament of Books announced!

The must-read book of the summer and winner of the QC Libraries’ 2017 Teen Tournament of Books is Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard!

Red Queen beat out 29 other titles chosen from the 2018 Iowa High School Book Award & Lincoln Award: Illinois Teen Readers’ Choice nominees in a five round bracket-style tournament. Participants voted for books they have read and/or those they wish to read.

NORTHEY RECOGNIZES SILOS AND SMOKESTACKS NATIONAL HERITAGE AREA WITH A SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE LEADER AWARD

WATERLOO, Iowa - Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey presented Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area with an Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Leader Award in recognition of their leadership in agritourism and sustainable heritage development. Northey recognized the efforts by Silos & Smokestacks to highlight the land, people, and communities in northeast Iowa that tell the story of agriculture in Iowa.

Iowa State Fair Food Department Adds 30 New Contests

DES MOINES, IA (08/04/2017) (readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair hosts the largest food department of any state fair and continues to grow with 30 new food contests this year- Nothing Compares to State Fair Thrills and food August 10-20, 2017.

Several notable contests will be making an appearance at this year's Fair including Spice it Up with Pampered Chef, 75th Anniversary Dessert, Hello Sally Lunn and a healthy contest in Healthy Creations a Variety of Veggies.

Silos & Smokestacks' Grants Share the Story of American Agriculture

WATERLOO, Iowa - Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) will award up to $50,000 through the 2017 General Grant Program. The grants will fund agriculture-related interpretive projects in the Heritage Area, including exhibit development, educational programs, interpretive signage, marketing and event programming.

Governor’s STEM Advisory Council announces new co-chair

(DES MOINES) – The Iowa Governor’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Advisory Council on Friday announced its new co-chair will be Roger Hargens, President and CEO of Accumold in Ankeny. He will serve in the role alongside Gov. Kim Reynolds.

Hargens will succeed Dr. Chris Nelson, President and CEO of Kemin Industries. Dr. Nelson will complete his two-year term as STEM Council co-chair in August.
