I get a kick out of hearing what other Iowa families serve at their holiday tables each year. Many Iowans celebrate Christmas Eve with a bowl of oyster stew or chili. One of my friends gave me his family’s traditional fruitcake recipe. WASHINGTON, December 5, 2017 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is promising increased cooperation with states in the operation of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to promote self-sufficiency, integrity in the program, and better customer service.  To make these improvements, USDA intends to offer state agencies greater local control over SNAP, the safety net program that serves millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families.

DES MOINES, Iowa, Sept. 13, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, Smithfield Foods’ Helping Hungry Homes® initiative, a program focused on alleviating hunger and helping Americans become more food secure, joined forces with Hy-Vee Inc. to donate nearly 40,000 pounds of protein to the Food Bank of Iowa. The donation, equivalent to nearly 160,000 servings, will help those fighting hunger across Des Moines and surrounding communities, where one in 175,000 Iowans are food insecure.

Kristin Bogdonas, nutrition educator for University of Illinois Extension, will go over the basics of canning including equipment, safe processing methods, and sources for reliable recipes. You'll also get practice canning with a red raspberry jam recipe. Light refreshments will be served upon arrival and there will be resources for everyone to take home.
The cost of this workshop is free but you must be registered in advance.

Come learn all about using a slow cooker, receive delicious recipes, food safety tips, and taste test some easy slow cooker dishes you can make at home! The workshop will be led by Kristin Bogdonas, University of Illinois Extension nutrition and wellness educator.

It is sponsored by the Rock Island County Association for Home and Community Education (HCE). The cost is $5 for public or $3 for HCE members. It will be held at the Port Byron Library from 1 - 2 pm.

The farm-to-fork movement (also known as farm-to-table) is all about strengthening the connection between farmers and consumers. On Sept.14, farmers, chefs, and consumers are invited to a University of Illinois field day to learn more.
