Now that summer has arrived, it is a time for family vacations, backyard barbeques and plenty of outdoor activities with food as the centerpiece. But before those steaks and burgers go on the grill, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) wants to remind consumers to keep their family and themselves safe from foodborne illness by using a food thermometer to ensure meat and poultry is cooked to the correct internal temperature.

Adam Gregg kicked off the ninth annual Yankee Doodle Drive Against Hunger today by announcing this year’s goal of 50,000 meals for hungry children and families. Representatives of the Des Moines Symphony, the Food Bank of Iowa, Bank of the West, Casey’s General Stores, Hy-Vee, Inc., the Polk County Board of Supervisors and KCCI joined the governor and lieutenant governor for the official launch at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines.

Our Community Garden Day is coming up on May 20th! Led by our Community Garden Coordinator Abbigail, we are going to be picking up some litter along the Freight House and in the garden, pulling weeds and dead plants, assembling two raised beds, and planting vegetables, fruits, and flowers. After the garden is put together, we are going to eat pizza made by the Food Hub’s Kitchen Coordinator, Kate.
