DAVENPORT, IOWA– During the month of February, nearly 50 area businesses and organizations will be involved in collecting funds and food for River Bend Foodbank by taking part in the Community Hunger Drive. The businesses will be holding a variety of activities throughout the month to engage their employees in raising donations for River Bend Foodbank.

MOLINE, IL - - Western Illinois University-Quad Cities will host its second annual Food Insecurity Conference from 10 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 2 on the WIU-QC campus, 3300 River Drive, Moline, in 103/104 Riverfront Hall. The event is free and open to the public, but advanced registration is required by Thursday, Feb. 15.

I get a kick out of hearing what other Iowa families serve at their holiday tables each year. Many Iowans celebrate Christmas Eve with a bowl of oyster stew or chili. One of my friends gave me his family’s traditional fruitcake recipe. Another family I know prepares a make-your-own waffle buffet on Christmas Eve, complete with whipped cream, strawberries and lots of maple syrup.

WASHINGTON, December 5, 2017 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is promising increased cooperation with states in the operation of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to promote self-sufficiency, integrity in the program, and better customer service.  To make these improvements, USDA intends to offer state agencies greater local control over SNAP, the safety net program that serves millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families.
