A new ornament competition is coming to the Muscatine Art Center as a fundraiser for Friends of the Muscatine Art Center. Crafters, artists, and craftsmen of all ages are encouraged to compete, and cash prizes will be award in two categories – one for adults and one for 18 and under. The Heartfelt and Handmade Ornament Competition will be on view from November 18th through December 14th.

West Branch, Iowa— The National Park Service is looking for volunteers on Saturday, September 30,  to help gather seeds from native plants in the prairie at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. Kids, ages two to seven, can train to become mini art masters starting in September at the Muscatine Art Center. The new program replaces Art for Tots which was geared toward preschool aged children. Mini Masters opens up the opportunity for kids through first grade to join in creating art. “This past summer I had quite a few kids return after kindergarten asking to join Tots class,” says Muscatine Art Center Program Coordinator, Teresa Stenstrup.

The first game in the National Football League was played in Douglas Park almost 100 years ago. The City of Rock Island and the Friends of Douglas Park intend to refurbish the south end of the park to commemorate that event. This includes the restoration of the 1915 firehouse as a museum recognizing the first game and the commitment of Rock Island firefighters over the years.
