You kind of have to feel bad these days for David Fincher fanatics who genuflect at the brutal, testosterone-fueled altars of Seven and Fight Club and, to a lesser degree, Zodiac. They finally get their first new Fincher feature since 2014's Gone Girl, and it turns out that in order to even slightly enjoy the director's Mank (which premiered on Netflix this past Friday), they're required to have a pretty healthy working knowledge of Citizen Kane.

Lars Rehnberg, vice-president for Davenport's seasonal tavern Miracle at the Freight House, discussed the pop-up venue's origins, operations, and challenges in this pandemic year, along with the yuletide décor that might make Disneyland only the second-happiest place on Earth. We spoke on Wednesday, December 2.

An annual, eagerly awaited holiday-music tradition will be given a virtual twist on December 12 when the professional vocal ensemble the Nova Singers delivers its live-stream concert Peace, Love, Joy!, a seasonal celebration featuring solos, small group performances, and yuletide numbers performed by the entire ensemble.

Presented in conjunction with the venue's current exhibition Haitian Masterworks, a Virtual Scholar Talk on Haitian art will be presented by Davenport's Figge Art Museum on December 10, with participants invited to learn more about the rich history of the region and the exhibit that focuses on such prevalent artistic themes as spirituality, transformation, the natural world, everyday life, and Haitian history.

Held in conjunction with the current exhibition T.J. Dedeaux-Norris Presents The Estate of Tameka Janean Norris, a special, virtual, members-only Q&A with the exhibit's creator Norris will take place on December 10, with the online guest discussing the complex legacy of an artist's identity after their passing, as well as the question at the exhibit's center: “What part of yourself must you hide or bury for another to survive?”

New Standards Men are a pair of "lapsed Iowans" based in Denver. Their album I Was a Starship finds ex-Dubuquers Drew Bissell (bass, electronics) and Jeremy Brashaw (guitar) joined by Michigander Ike Turner (drums) and two more un-lapsed Iowans: the venerable Bob Bucko Jr. of Dubuque on sax and synths; and Lee County's Luke Tweedy, who added synthesizer in addition to recording and engineering the album at his own Flat Black Studios in Iowa City. The three extended tracks are a wholly Midwestern creation but sound unearthly in origin, like a fading transmission from space, a slow and lonely echo that rises to a rumble and dies out.

Continuing the musicians' season-long celebration of composer Ludwig van Beethoven's 250th birthday, the Quad City Symphony Orchestra and piano soloist Marian Lee will deliver a moving performance of the third Masterworks program Beethoven Symphony No. 3, a tribute to Beethoven's boundary-breaking composition Eroica available for home viewing (and listening) on December 6.
