DES MOINES – Thousands of elementary, middle school and high school students across Iowa participated in Secretary of State Paul Pate’s 2017 Iowa Youth Straw Poll on Wednesday. The Straw Poll is an exercise designed to inspire civic engagement among Iowa’s youth and give them a feel for how the electoral process works.

Rock Island, Ill. – The Ascentra Credit Union Foundation provided a grant of $11,745 for the purchase of 75 Chromebooks that were used during Spring Forward’s Summer Enrichment Camps for children entering kindergarten through 7th grade at Frances Willard, Rock Island Academy, Earl Hansen, Longfellow, Center for Math and Science, and Thomas Jefferson Elementary Schools in Rock Island.

The college and its departments award more than $3 million in scholarships each year. AMES, IA (10/31/2017)-- A group of sixty student leaders in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences were honored for receiving the Fred Foreman Scholarship for Growth in Leadership Participation. The Foreman Scholarship is awarded to top students who serve the college through leadership roles as peer mentors, club officers and competitive teams with a preference for students in activities that assist in recruiting prospective students.

Matthew Jefferson of Andalusia, IL (61232), has received the Catharine Maurice Carroll Graduate Scholarship. Jefferson is a graduate student studying kinesiology.

SPRINGFIELD (Oct. 25, 2017) — Noting the importance of student learning extending beyond school hours, Gov. Bruce Rauner today proclaimed Oct. 26, 2017, as Lights On Afterschool Day in Illinois.

He was joined by officials from ACT Now Coalition and the Springfield Urban League to recognize the importance of student learning beyond the school day.

AMES, IA (10/12/2017)-- Mary Kirk of Davenport, Iowa, has received the Jewel Porter Scholarship from the Iowa State University Department of Human Development and Family Studies for the 2017-18 academic year. Kirk is studying child, adult, and family services at Iowa State.
