Close Encounters of the Third Kind (PG; The Last Picture House Rooftop: Thursday, June 4, 8:45 p.m.) - Before Steven Spielberg's 1997 sci-fi masterpiece, I'd never known true cinematic awe – the kind that leaves you staring at the screen, slack-jawed, with the same hushed reverence of the film's scientists at the finale. IMDb listing.

Come & See (not rated; FilmScene at the Chauncey: Thursday, June 4, 7 p.m.) - IMDb listing.

Dazed & Confused (R; The Last Picture House Rooftop: Friday, May 29, and Saturday, May 30, 8:45 p.m.) - You could do loads worse than spend an hour-and-a-half with the jocks, cheerleaders, freaks, nerds, bullies, hangers-on, and unexplainable whack-jobs populating Richard Linklater's thrillingly verbal ode to the joys of doing absolutely nothing. IMDb listing.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (PG-13; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, VIP Cinemas) - This sequel would have been plenty entertaining, or at least entertaining enough, had it merely been a light, funny exercise in getting the band back together. It's happily even more than that. IMDb listing.

Elephants: Giants of the Desert (not rated; Putnam Museum & Science Center) - IMDb listing.

Flight of the Butterflies (not rated; Putnam Museum & Science Center) - A bit pokey, but the slow, unspeakably beautiful explosion that is the butterflies' mass exodus is enough to make you believe in God - or, at the very least, in the gods of nature docs. IMDb listing.

Funny Face (not rated; The Last Picture House: Sunday, May 31, 11:50 a.m.) - IMDb listing.

Grave of the Fireflies (not rated; FilmScene at the Chauncey: Wednesday, June 3, 7 p.m.) - IMDb listing.

I Love Boosters (R; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, The Last Picture House, FilmScene on the Ped Mall, Marcus Sycamore Cinema) - Boots Riley's surrealist comedy is like a collective, peyote-enhanced take on the oeuvres of Wes Anderson, Jordan Peele, the Coen brothers, and Chuck Jones. IMDb listing.

Latchkey Movie Club Presents ... (not rated; The Last Picture House: Monday, June 1, 6 p.m.) - LastPictureHouse.com.

Masters of the Universe: Early-Access Screening (PG-13; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAXL Wednesday, June 3, 7 p.m.) - IMDb listing.

Melancholia (R; FilmScene at the Chauncey: Monday, June 1, 7 p.m.) - IMDb listing.

The Met Opera: El Ultimo Sueno de Friday y Diego (not rated; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, Marcus Sycamore Cinema: Saturday, May 20, noon, and Wednesday, June 3, 1 & 6:30 p.m.) - MetOpera.org.

Michael (PG-13; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, VIP Cinemas, Marcus Sycamore Cinema) - Jaafar Jackson and the concert scenes are, for the most part, genuinely thrilling, but when this Jackson bio-book moves off the stage, it's oftentimes painfully terrible. IMDb listing.

Midway (PG-13; Aledo Opera House: Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31, 6 p.m.) - It was mildly fun to see this unimaginative, reasonably effective World War II procedural-slash-action-pic work for its intended viewers who didn't seem to mind the expository bluntness of it all, nor the deadening gray-on-beige color palette that made me spend its 135 minutes fighting the urge to nap. IMDb listing.

Mortal Kombat II (R; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, VIP Cinemas) - This gory videogame adaptation is a contact high that vanishes with your first breath of fresh air, such as the one that hits as you walk from the auditorium to your car. IMDb listing.

Mother Mary (R; The Last Picture House) - IMDb listing.

Obsession (R; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, VIP Cinemas, FilmScene at the Chauncey, Marcus Sycamore Cinema) - This is Curry  Barker's chance to give Gen Z a Fatal Attraction of its very own, and if his movie doesn't wholly succeed … . Well, Adrian Lyne's 1987 smash had major problems, too. IMDb listing.

Open Air Media Festival 2026 (not rated; FilmScene in the Park: Friday, May 29, 8:30 p.m.) - ICFilmScene.org.

Paddington (PG; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX) - Hilarious and clever and touching, and easily the finest outing of its type since 2006's Charlotte's WebIMDb listing.

Paddington in Peru (PG; Aledo Opera House: Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31, 3 p.m.) - Antonio Banderas and Olivia Colman deliver more than enough zeal to make director Dougal Wilson's followup, despite its occasional disappointments, a thorough delight. IMDb listing.

Passenger (R; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, VIP Cinemas, Marcus Sycamore Cinema) - André Øvredal's horror thriller is little more than a derivative, if well-executed, B-grade shocker, but it boasts fantastic set pieces, the finest one courtesy of Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. IMDb listing.

Peddi (not rated; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, Marcus Sycamore Cinema: opens Wednesday, June 3) - IMDb listing.

Pressure (PG-13; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, VIP Cinemas, FilmScene at the Chauncey, Marcus Sycamore Cinema.) - IMDb listing.

Project Hail Mary (PG-13; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, VIP Cinemas) - Phil Lord's and Christopher Miller's sci-fi outing is a lot of fun, but given its scenario, is the focus on humor, which at times lapses into pure shtick, more hindrance than help? IMDb listing.

Revolutionary America (not rated; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, VIP Cinemas, M<arcus Sycamore Cinema: Sunday, May 31, through Tuesday, June 2) - IMDb listing.

Shaolin Soccer (PG-13; FilmScene on the Ped Mall Rooftop: Sunday, May 31, 8:30 p.m.) - IMDb listing.

The Sheep Detectives (PG; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, VIP Cinemas, Voy 61 Drive In Theatre, FilmScene on the Ped Mall, Marcus Sycamore Cinema) - It's kind of like Babe meets Paddington meets The Wild Robot meets Agatha Christie … which means, unexpectedly yet delightfully, it's also kind of perfect. IMDb listing.

Shrek 2 (PG; VIP Cinemas) - Itshould easily satisfy the fan base that adored the original, but for the unconverted, this sequel - its moments of inspiration aside - will be just as irksome. IMDb listing.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu (PG-13; Davenport 53rd 18 + IMAX, VIP Cinemas, Voy 61 Drive In Theatre, Marcus Sycamore Cinema) - At one point, employing the powers of the Force, Grogu levitates a Hutt the size of a Kia Sorento. It's neither his first nor last act of heavy lifting here. IMDb listing.

Stolen Kingdom w/ Filmmaker Q&A (not rated; The Last Picture House: Tuesday, June 2, 7 p.m.) - IMDb listing.

Stories of Community Spring 2026 (not rated; FilmScene at the Chauncey: Saturday, May 30, 12:30 p.m.) - ICFilmScene.org.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (PG; VIP Cinemas) - Barring one repeated gag involving a slow-moving robot that appears air-lifted in from the Zootopia DMV, you'd be hard-pressed to find a single legitimate joke – and that's with Jack Black reprising his role  IMDb listing.

Superpower Dogs (not rated; Putnam Museum & Science Center) - Daniel Ferguson provides enough globe-trotting action for a James Bond flick, treating us to first-rate training footage and re-created missions in locales ranging from the Canadian Rockies to the Italian coast to a debris-strewn site near New York's Ground Zero. IMDb listing.

T. Rex (not rated; Putnam Museum & Science Center) - IMDb listing.
